In his weekly address, President Barack Obama announced that on Monday, his administration will send to Congress the blueprint for an updated Elementary and Secondary Education Act that will overhaul No Child Left Behind. The plan will set the ambitious goal of ensuring that all students graduate from high school prepared for college and a career, and it will provide states, districts and schools with the flexibility and resources to reach that goal.
“My vote today is consistent with my opposition to the recent troop surge and reflects my belief that our current efforts in Afghanistan are ineffective, and that our troops and resources could be more effectively deployed elsewhere. It’s time for us to redirect our focus back home, where numerous challenges continue to burden families in my district and across the country. Nobody disputes that. More Americans will lose their family’s health insurance if they switch jobs or lose their job. More small businesses will be forced to choose between health care and hiring. More insurance companies will deny people coverage who have preexisting conditions, or they’ll drop people’s coverage when they get sick and need it most. And the rising cost of Medicare and Medicaid will sink our government deeper and deeper and deeper into debt. On all of this we agree.
In a groundswell of protests against devastating budget cuts to neighborhood schools and other critical services, California’s teachers, administrators, school employees, parents and students will join a statewide “Day of Action†on Thursday, March 4, to stop the governor and Legislature from cutting billions more from a public school system already reeling from $17 billion in cuts over the past two years – and to tell lawmakers it’s time to close corporate tax loopholes.
“I wish we could just get this done and move on as many other militaries have,†Sanchez, D-Santa Ana, said at an Armed Services subcommittee meeting Wednesday afternoon.
