Since announcing his candidacy on October 1st, Derek Tran has raised over $529,000. Tran outraised the entire Democratic field’s previous fundraising quarter in his first 24 hours and never looked back. His total raised and cash on hand advantage dwarfs those of the other Democratic candidates in this race; comparing his current cash on hand to the last reported numbers of his opponents from Q3, his cash on hand is 4x more than his nearest intraparty rival despite them campaigning for the better part of the year. With ballots dropping in less than 35 days, Tran will be able to communicate his message districtwide.
Commanding Poll Numbers
Public polling released in late November shows Tran leading the Democratic field in the initial ballot test and extending his lead comfortably to double digits after messaging. California’s 45th District has been listed by the DCCC as a “District In Play.” A majority-minority district, the district has the second largest AAPI population (36.97%) of any congressional district, and the largest Vietnamese community in the country. President Biden won the district by +6 points and there is a +6 point Democratic registration advantage. Tran, the son of Vietnamese refugees and the only candidate to speak Vietnamese has a uniquely shared story with many swing voters here.
