The DPOC took action against a proposal to change who holds the Mayor’s office in Irvine. See below.
Opposing the Proposal to Eliminate the Directly Elected Mayor in Irvine
WHEREAS, the City of Irvine has had a directly-elected mayor since 1988, constituting most of the period since the city’s incorporation in 1971 and will be among the eight cities in Orange County to have a directly-elected mayor on the November ballot; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of Irvine is considering amending its charter to eliminate its directly-elected mayor, as well as extending the term of office for council members from two to three consecutive terms, to be put before the voters in November; and
WHEREAS, if enacted and approved by voters, Irvine – already the most populous incorporated city in the state without district elections – would become the most populous incorporated city in California without a directly-elected mayor;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Democratic Party of Orange County is actively working toward a fully educated citizenry, equal opportunity for influence, honest public debate, competitive elections, and robust civic participation in order to enhance the democratic process; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Party calls upon the Democratic majority of the Irvine City Council to combat this antidemocratic attempt at voter suppression and election subversion by rejecting this proposal.
