City of Santa Ana: Not Investigating Bustamante

Santa Ana Councilman Carlos Bustamante

The City of Santa Ana is not investigating Carlos Bustamante as the Ward 3 Councilman remains on paid administrative leave from his job with the Orange County Public Works Department.  According to Jose Gonzalez, the city’s PIO, the city is not discussing a possible investigation, is not considering an investigation and is not engaged in an investigation regarding allegations related to Bustamante’s county job.

There’s no evidence that Bustamante’s county job and the investigation by the county constitutes a violation of the city’s code of ethics.  If the county fires Bustamante pending the results of their investigation, its hard to pin down a reason for the city council to call for his resignation from the council.  If Bustamante is fired, a resignation is appropriate to allow him the time needed to repair his personal and professional reputation.

The OC Register’s most recent coverage of the case can be found here.  Names of some of the women alleged to have been questioned is starting to leak out into the blogsphere raising privacy issues that could affect the outcome of the investigation.

  1. Our great santa ana council majority told me to keep sending in those anonymous letters until Carlos is fired. I just hope Sheriff Sandra Hutchens doesn’t check for fingerprints or DNA. If mother can’t make my bail Sal might have to sell a couple of his Angels season tickets.
