The issue here is not that Nelson’s firm represents people in criminal matters. It’s that he has spent the better part of two years trying to cover that up. Nelson says his clients are accused of “small potatoes” crimes. They’re your neighbors and family members who get in trouble.
Nelson’s law firm focuses on ambulance chasing and criminal defense. He’s been trying to distance himself from the criminal defense work that he and his firm perform. Because of his work in criminal defense, Nelson should know you can run, but you can never hide.
Shawn Nelson has gone to great lengths to try to hide that history. I reported a while ago about Nelson’s specialties as once advertised on his law practice website. After that story ran, Nelson pulled out all the stops and had the record scrubbed from readily available Internet history.

A Liberal OC post about Irvine Council member Steven Choi’s residency in AD-70 is repeatedly referenced in a request for an investigation into charges of election/voter fraud filed by Tustin council member Jerry Amante’s pal Doug Davert. In an April 6 letter to Nelson, the FPPC said “your actions violated the (Political Reform) Act” because he should have filed his statement by March 12 but “only filed your statement on March 22, 2010, after you learned that a sworn complaint (by Grindle) was filed against you.”
