Repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell debate mirrors Desegregation of Armed Forces

In reviewing the debate over the repreal of the ban on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans serving openly in the armed forces in the context of the debate more than 60 years ago I found some striking similarities. The Harry S Truman Library website has a chronology of the debate from 60 years ago here. This history lesson makeds it clear, that change does not come easily for our armed forces.

World AIDS Day serves as an important reminder that HIV/AIDS has not gone away. More than one million Americans currently live with HIV/AIDS in the United States, and more than 56,000 become infected each year. For too long, this epidemic has loomed over our Nation and our world, taking a devastating toll on some of the most vulnerable among us. On World AIDS Day, we mourn those we have lost and look to the promise of a brighter future and a world without HIV/AIDS.

History: The Labor Movement and Labor Day

The Labor Movement has fought tremendously to protect workers over the years. Among other achievements, labor has led the struggle to end child labor, establish the eight-hour work day and paid overtime, secure guaranteed minimum wage, fight for the weekend, secure unemployment insurance, and establish the legal right of workers to form unions and collectively bargain for benefits. But not many Americans are not fully aware of the history behind Labor Day itself.
