Garden Grove Council Member Kim Nguyen to Run for BoS District 1

Garden Grove, CA — Backed by endorsements from prominent local councilmembers, Garden Grove Councilwoman Kim Nguyen announced her candidacy for Orange County Supervisor, District 1.

Councilwoman Nguyen is a Health Policy Specialist, Garden Grove Councilwoman, and first-generation Vietnamese and Mexican American. If elected, Kim would be the first Latina elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors. In 2016, she became the first Latina and youngest person ever elected to Garden Grove City Council. As a member of City Council, she championed historic policies to protect vulnerable immigrant residents and brought new infrastructure to East Garden Grove.

“People like me aren’t supposed to run for office. I wasn’t born into a wealthy or powerful family. I’m the daughter of a Vietnamese refugee and Mexican immigrant. I had to work multiple jobs to put myself through school. I first ran for office in 2016 despite being told I was too young, too inexperienced, hadn’t paid my dues and needed to wait my turn. I’m running for Supervisor to refocus the County’s resources on our communities, and to fight for those who don’t have a voice in our government.”

“I am happy to support my colleague Kim Nguyen for Orange County Supervisor. I have known Kim to be very hard-working, intelligent, and driven. From her work and skills developing Garden Groves district map that we now use for local elections to her everyday work serving on Garden Grove City Council, she has proven she won’t be outworked or outdone when it comes to serving her constituents and improving their way of life.”
– Garden Grove Councilmember John R. O’Neill

“Councilwoman Kim Nguyen has stood up and delivered for her community in Garden Grove. We need someone to stand up for us at the County level. I’m proud to endorse Kim Nguyen for Orange County Supervisor — she is exactly the breath of fresh air and leadership the residents of District 1 need.”
– Santa Ana Councilmember David Penaloza

Councilwoman Nguyen has called Garden Grove home since the age of ten. She attended Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary, Doig Intermediate, and Santiago High School. She graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz with a degree in politics and a minor in legal studies. She is the first in her family to graduate high school and receive a college degree.

The first Supervisorial District includes the cities of Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Westminster, Midway City, and parts of Fountain Valley.  The first Supervisorial District demographics are 38.72% Latino and  30.57% Asian. Voters 18-35 comprise the largest age bloc, with over 36% of the registered voters.   Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly 20 points — making it one of the most competitive local races in California.
