Was Tuesday’s Irvine City Council meeting the October surprise for Mayoral candidates Larry Agran and Tammy Kim?

The pair have the most visible campaigns for mayor with four other candidates seeking the office.  Public comments lasted well over an hour and both took hits.

For Agran, as vice mayor, chaired the last meeting in September and allowed a video to be played during public comments.  Many felt the video and its message was antisemitic.  Agran allowed it to be played and was criticized on the dais from Council members Kim and Kathleen Treseder for playing it.  There were a host of speakers condemning Agran during the October 8 meeting for playing it.

As I listened to speaker after speaking blasting Agran for allowing the video to be played, I was reminded of former Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait who routinely allowed the late William Fitzgerald to use all sorts of vile, cruel, personally-directed hate speech aimed at women council members and the late Jordan Brandman during public comments.  The women were called whores and sluts who had had abortions; Brandman had anti-gay and antisemitic slurs directed his way.

To his credit, Tait would admonish Fitzgerald for his horrible comments and told those in attendance the microphone and any speech from the public in city council chambers was protected free speech.  In discussions with Agran over the years, I know he believes the cure for speech you don’t like is more speech, not less.  And, since this is America, the First Amendment guarantees that right. Just ask the ACLU.  For Kim and Treseder, where do you draw the line on censorship?  For those who condemned Agran for allowing the video, you had every right to speak out and express your outrage and you did so effectively.

But the real fireworks came from several members of the public towards Tammy Kim.  These residents came forth and said a flyer was left on their windshield (but did not say where or how).  The flyer is above. The photos suggest an alleged romantic relationship between the two and residents called in the city to investigate the pair, who are on the board of directors of the Orange County Power Authority, for any possible wrongdoing.  The speakers’ noted Jung is married.

A copy of the flyer was submitted to the city clerk and is now a public record.   I was sent a copy of the flyer yesterday, but the photos aren’t new to TheLiberalOC.  They were sent to me several weeks ago and I’ve done nothing with them.  My perspective is the only people who matter in a marriage are those in it.

During the 2022 election cycle, sources tried to suggest another candidate for office and their spouse were separated and how I should write about this.  But I knew the tip was false.  But if you want to drop off my list of people I trust with information, lying is the best way to do so.  I rarely speak to that source today.

The photos aren’t Donna Rice sitting on Gary Hart’s lap in front of The Monkey Business boat from 1988, but it’s the interlocked fingers and the hand on the knee that got to me.  I’m told the photos were taken in Late February.

The issue of Kim and Jung popped up in the OJ blog last May in a post about Jung’s Fullerton Council member Ahmad Zahra.

OJ Blog editor Vern Nelson writes: “What about [his (Zahra’s) council nemesis] Fred Jung? Do you know how he makes a living? How has he gotten three upgraded Porsches while on Council? You should really be looking into the relationship he’s having with [Irvine Councilwoman] Tammy Kim – and they’re both on the OC Power Authority!” (And another board or two he named off.) “Now THAT is a real conflict, that affects people!”

And in comments, Nelson added:

I ran it past Fred, he agrees that it’s beneath response, irrelevant to the OCPA, and nobody’s business.

But now it’s no longer nobody’s business.

I did text Kim one photo to say “Is this you?”  Her response was “Your misogyny never ceases to amaze me.”  I pressed for more details and she replied “clearly you are completely oblivious to your own rampant misogyny.”  I reached out to Fred Jung and have no response from him.  I have to wonder how what happened in Irvine Tuesday night will play out in Fullerton.

Kim doubled down on the misogyny charge during her turn to speak in the meeting: “It’s was really a disgraceful example of misogyny that women in leadership still face today and its not enough for my opponent to challenge me on policy or my vision for the city.  Instead, they resort to the lowest form of attack; spreading baseless, sexist, insinuations based on internal patriarchy…internalized patriarchy.  And so, again, this is not just an attack on me, this is an attack on all women who dare to lead with strength and courage and conviction.  So please women, do not allow yourself to be faced with these baseless types of attacks that are sexist and rooted in misogyny.”

I don’t think Kim is using the term misogyny or patriarchy correctly.

And then she announced OC Fire Department open house in several locations for this weekend; that union has given Kim $150,000 to fight off a possible recall that will never see the light of day and she has used some of the money to send mail promoting herself this election season.

There is no denial here and its unclear how the patriarchy plays into this.  The accusation against Agran is somehow behind this isn’t based in fact, and it comes off as “my opponent exposed behavior I won’t explain.”

Let’s call person or persons who put out the flyer what they are – cowards.  But for those residents who came to the council meeting to criticize Kim to her face for an alleged affair are not.  That criticism isn’t an attack on all women at all – it’s an admonishment for her behavior exhibited in photographs which Kim has not denied. And those who spoke out have asked the city to conduct an investigation of Kim, but an investigation for what exactly was never stated.

I’m told an FBI complaint has been filed against Kim for corruption regarding a City RFP process and there are allegedly several complaints filed with the FPPC to investigate her for her many political committees and fundraising associated with them.

The ballots are out; Agran is going to take a hit from those who believe he’s a self-hating Jew and Kim will take a hit from these photos. And this just might leave the door ajar for someone else occupying the mayor’s seat in December.

Candidates who have engaged in extramarital affairs have been elected; see Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign for an example.  Governor Gavin Newsom cheated on his first wife (which is why, as a convention delegate, I did not vote for him).  You don’t have to go far to look for politicians and elected who have had  issues with being faithful.  There would be plenty of policy reasons to vote against Kim or Jung.  Ultimately, this is up to voters to decide.

  1. The video wasn’t anti-Semitic for several reasons like the ADL doesn’t represent all Jews and the speaker was a queer, Jewish female. I didn’t see any one from the ADL like Rabbi Petey Levi protesting. The ADL is a hate group. Here she is.             • Look at Oliver’s track record. Every City he leaves, he leaves the City in financial shambles. The mess in HB is yes in part to the ongoing legal battles but Oliver spent like a drunken sailor there as he did in Monrovia and now in Irvine. He plays each Council Member against each other so they have no time to realize what he is doing. He is very smart. Someone needs to inquire as to why so many staff members have left Irvine. The pattern of going after older employees may finally be his undoing as there is a lawsuit in HB and the Court ruled that a deposition will be taken by the former HR Manager who in the Court documents said a culture of harassment and discrimination against older employees was in place

              • You are too kind re Chi’s track record. Among other things, career highlights included brewing discord amongst municipality staff, losing two police chiefs within a month and at a minimum being accused of sexual harassment. Not exhaustive.

What was antisemitic and misogynistic was attacking Ms. Kern for criticising the ADL exemplified by the one Jewish Zionist that railed against her by calling her a boy who couldn’t know a thing about Israel or Jewish history or something like that.   10. Kim has been a disaster on our council for the last 4 years, but this is tabloid and gives her base something to rally around. This usually a decently written, informative blog.     • I struggled with writing about the photos until I watched the meeting and saw people come forward about the flyer and the video from the previous meeting. I haven’t spoken to Larry since August and don’t need his permission to write anything. Thanks for the compliment btw. I try to hold elected accountable.

  15. Tammy Kim has the nerve to accuse her opponent as the one who leaked this picture. It could have been from a number of people, or groups of people in Irvine. Let’s face it, Tammy Kim is not well liked. And, so much so, she had to rent an Apartment in the Woodbridge District, because should she lose the race for Mayor, she will run for council, and nobody likes her in her own district. But news flash to Tammy Kim, the majority of Woodbridge doesn’t like you either! The picture was either from the Tammy Kim Recall group, or the North Irvine residents she condemned because of the toxic asphalt plant, saying they were creating “hysteria”. I give kudo’s to the person(s) who took the picture and released it!!! And btw, Fred Jung has five kids. Jung talks down to people he doesn’t like, is arrogant, and self-serving. Imagine that, I just described Tammy Kim also! Both sit on the Board of the OCPA, and one could assume Irvine now has 3 votes on the board! The fact that Kim voted for Fred Jung to be Chair of the OCPA, over her own colleague, Irvine Council member Kathleen Treseder, tells me there is a problem! The OCPA is also expensing all kinds of ratepayer funds to organizations of their choosing, that have absolutely nothing to do with reinvesting in renewable energy programs, like $4,000 to the City of Fullerton for Tommy Lasorda Day, $2,500 to Korean businesses overseas, $14,684 for the Signia Hotel in San Jose, and $3,851.10 for Dinner at Ella’s. This is just a fraction of the spending going on by OCPA Board members…all coming from the OVERCHARGED RATEPAYERS, in the middle and 100% renewable plans! It’s disgusting! And now Fountain Valley is buying their BS and getting ready to join…without even getting a Study done!! Crazy! Don’t these people realize they are NOT getting 100% renewable energy? Where is the backup system? What happens when the sun goes down? Fountain Valley never asked!

  20. This is old news! Ask any Fullerton staff members Tammy and Fred have been an item for a LONG TIME! Tammy used to come and sit and watch Fullerton meetings then she and Fred would leave and go to a building in Fullerton owned by none other than Tony Bushala to do God knows what. Everyone knows they have been together and who cares if he is cheating on his wife, this dalliance only should be public knowledge if they are conspiring together about OCPA and who knows what other Boards they are on; then again, they could be OCPA Brown Act Buddies. Tammy has also been known to pressure other electeds to make sure she and Fred serve on League committees.

No one knows the details of their private lives, and it’s frankly irrelevant to the real issues at hand. It only shows that Zahra was able to find two people in Farrah Khan and Larry Agran who were stupid enough to bite on a story he’s been trying to get out quite some time now.

    Bringing this up and airing it during public comments only makes Larry look weak. It’s clear his campaign is floundering, as all his efforts seem focused on attacking Kim. Did he actually think that branding Kim with a “Scarlet A” was a winning campaign move? From his misleading Irvine Community News & Views editions to his videos and text messages bashing Kim, it’s obvious his supporters are desperate, and Larry is sinking lower with each move. The same people smearing Kim and Jung’s personal lives are the ones who see Hamas as freedom fighters—what does that tell you?

    As for tying their relationship to OCPA, that’s completely off base. Even Vern knew Zahra’s attempt to connect Jung and Kim to any wrongdoing was a stretch. Let’s not forget, Kim never wanted to serve on the OCPA board in the first place, but Agran left her no choice when he refused to fill Irvine’s second seat.

    Dan, your readers expect better from you than to play TMZ reporter. You should have recognized this for what it is—a desperate political ploy. I hope you were just misled, rather than complicit in it.

    • It’s not sexist under the circumstances. The same thing screwed up the prosecutors in Georgia going after Trump.

      Larry didn’t bring it up in public comments.

      Tammy needs to stop going after ICNV. Talk about a story that hasn’t gained any traction. And, Tammy promoted Epoch Times an outfit run by a Chinese religious sect experiencing much scrutiny over fraud allegations – the news outfit not the sect.

      And, it’s not off base to tie their relationship to their participation in OCPA. And, it isn’t Larry’s fault she is still on the OCPA. She could have voted to get out with Larry and Mike but she balked. She can’t have it both ways.

    As for tying their relationship to OCPA, that’s completely off base. Even Vern knew Zahra’s attempt to connect Jung and Kim to any wrongdoing was a stretch. Let’s not forget, Kim never wanted to serve on the OCPA board in the first place, but Agran left her no choice when he refused to fill Irvine’s second seat.

    Dan, your readers expect better from you than to play TMZ reporter. You should have recognized this for what it is—a desperate political ploy. I hope you were just misled, rather than complicit in it.

    • You know, I debated writing about this when I first learend of it and did not; but when the flyer hit windshields and the photos came out and people showed up in Irvine and Fullerton to talk about it, you cannot sweep it under the rug. Jung was beaten up during public comments Tuesday. As Democrats, we’ve gone after Trump for his infidelities with mutiple women which is one of the reasons that makes him unfit for office. I reported a story that the public made public. I have to wonder if OCPA will create new standards on fraternization. I appreciate you expect high standards here, so thank you for that. But please know that none of this coverage has anything to do with Agran. And the first part of this post is noting criticism of his decisions from members of the public.

        Mujajajajaja. Funny, her only ally on the Irvine city council decided to vote for Jung to chair the OCPA over her. Treseder is a joke. And so is Kim, Shin, er, whatever.

  24. …meanwhile at this same meeting, item 4.2 passed. This overrides Caltrans and the Airport commission’s recommendations. It bypasses the codes to add 15,000 new rabbit hutch apartments to the Irvine business district. IBC has already built 17,000 units recently. The UCI campus’s 19,000 homes do not count in Sacramento for our housing numbers. One brave woman and a Caltrans Airport representative opposed this during the comments. One zoom caller was for it.

  27. Fred and Tammy have been shagging for a very long time. It’s even happened inside Fullerton City Hall. There is a discreet side entrance she uses to sneak in to his office suite that is located in an isolated area in the basement of city hall. They have been funneling money through the Korean Federation for years which I’m sure is a way to launder other campaign contributions as well. What’s most troubling is what they’re up to on the OCPA and the footsies they’re playing there with each other.
