National MAGA Republicans, Led by House Speaker Mike Johnson, Descend on CA-47 to Highlight Baugh’s Campaign, Making Clear the Importance of this Race

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — National MAGA Republicans made clear their strong ties to fellow Trumpist Scott Baugh, the Republican candidate for California’s 47th Congressional District running against Democratic State Senator Dave Min, by hosting a lavish fundraiser featuring House Speaker Mike Johnson last night in Newport Beach, right in the heart of CA-47.

Speaker Johnson, known for his advocacy of a total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the woman, represents the kind of extremist ideology that Baugh has pledged his support to. It’s hardly unexpected, considering Baugh has fully embraced Johnson’s MAGA agenda, advocating for an absolute ban on abortion and opposition to safeguarding same-sex marriage rights.

“Scott Baugh cozying up to Speaker Mike Johnson in Newport Beach isn’t just about endorsements– it’s a clear signal that CA-47 is ground zero in the fight for the House,” said Min campaign spokeswoman, Amelia Matier. “Baugh’s connections to white nationalists and his backing by groups against abortion and LGBTQ+ rights fit right into Johnson’s MAGA Congressional playbook. This isn’t just another race; it’s where we draw the line. Electing Dave Min means rejecting that divisive, harmful agenda and moving forward with leadership that genuinely reflects our district’s values”

Throughout his political career, Scott Baugh has shown his total disregard for the rights or concerns of Orange County families, or for that matter, the laws of California and the United States of America. Notably, under his leadership as the Chair of the Orange County Republican Party, nearly 600 residents found their voter registrations altered without consent, culminating in 12 arrests. His legal troubles didn’t end there; Baugh faced indictment on 20 criminal charges, including four felony counts, of manipulating election results, campaign finance violations and persuading someone to commit perjury.

This disregard for ethical governance and community welfare speaks to Baugh’s broader political agenda, which eschews practical results for working Americans in favor of stoking divisive cultural wars.  Rather than focus on education, public safety or economic growth– Baugh remains committed to being another culture war conspirator in Washington D.C.. He’s already gotten off to a head start – incoherently stating the “war on wokeness” was more dangerous than 9/11 and World War II.

In stark contrast, California’s 47th Congressional District has the opportunity to elect Dave Min, a candidate whose credentials and actions speak volumes about his commitment to the community. As a dedicated advocate for Orange County, a first-generation Korean American, a former business law professor, and a staunch supporter of reproductive rights, Min brings a nuanced understanding of the issues facing Southern California families. During the financial crisis, Min fought to hold Wall Street accountable and to help stabilize our economy. During his time in the State Senate – where he represented 80% of CA-47 – Min’s legislative achievements span from enshrining abortion rights in the California Constitution and bolstering protections for domestic violence survivors, to banning gun sales on state property and pioneering initiatives to combat our climate crisis.

A former University of California Irvine Law Professor, Min has spent his career in public service fighting for the American Dream. After graduating from Harvard Law School right after the Enron and Worldcom accounting scandals, Min turned down high-paying corporate law jobs to instead prosecute corporate fraud at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He went on to serve as an economic policy director on Capitol Hill, fighting for economic fairness and opportunity during the height of the mortgage crisis, before coming back home to California to teach at what was then a brand new law school at UC Irvine. During his time in the California Legislature, Senator Min has been a champion on women’s reproductive rights, gun safety, and climate justice in the California Legislature, and he has also been a stalwart leader on public safety and education issues, earning the endorsements of Orange County’s Police Officers, Deputy Sheriffs, Firefighters, and Teachers.

California’s 47th is an open Congressional District in Orange County that includes the Cities of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Seal Beach, and portions of Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Woods. Incumbent Katie Porter is vacating the seat to run for U.S. Senate. In 2022, Porter defeated former Assemblymember Republican Scott Baugh by 3.44% in this “toss-up” district. State Senator Dave Min currently represents over 80% of Congressional District 47 in Sacramento. In 2020, Min received over 158,000 votes within CA-47, defeating incumbent John Moorlach by 5.15% in this area. 19% of the registered voters in CA-47 are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, including one of the largest Korean-American populations in the country.
