Coming on the heels of endorsement announcements from the Hubert H. Humphrey Democratic club and the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC), the Kim Nguyen for Congress campaign today announced an impressive and game-changing endorsement from SEIU California, the largest labor union in the state and one of the most important endorsements in the race.
David Huerta, President of SEIU USWW and SEIU State Council, released the following statement:
“On behalf of our 700,000 healthcare workers, janitors, social workers, caregivers, city, education, county, and state employees in California, the SEIU State Council is proud to endorse Kim Nguyen for Congress. Kim has always fought for her community, stood up for working families, and delivered on the issues that matter and we know that she will be a champion for workers in DC. Taking back the House runs right through CA-45 and Kim Nguyen is the best Democrat to defeat Michelle Steel in 2024!”
In response to this major endorsement, Councilwoman Nguyen responded:
“I’m extremely humbled by the faith that SEIU and their members have placed in me and their commitment to supporting our campaign. More than ever, I am committed to winning this race on behalf of working families across Southern California who currently do not have a voice in Congress with Michelle Steel. We are building a coalition to win and I will fight everyday to flip CA-45 and defeat MAGA Michelle in 2024.”
Since announcing her congressional campaign, Councilwoman Kim Bernice Nguyen has amassed over 70 federal, state, county, local, education, labor, and Democratic Party endorsements including Congresswomen Linda Sanchez, Katie Porter, Jill Tokuda, and Sara Jacobs, as well as Congressman Lou Correa, CHC BOLD PAC, ASPIRE PAC, PODER PAC, and Women in Leadership (WIL).The campaign has also released endorsements from State Senator Tom Umberg, Former State Assemblyman Tom Daly, Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, Assemblyman Josh Lowenthal, Assemblyman Avelino Valencia, and OC Supervisor Katrina Foley, in addition to the Orange County Labor Federation, LA/OC Building and Construction Trades Council, UA Local 250, the Teamsters Joint Council 42, The Orange County Employees Association, IUPAT District Council 36, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, and the Hubert H. Humphrey Democratic Club, showing that she is the Democrat who can win the primary and ultimately defeat MAGA Republican Michelle Steel.
The daughter of a Vietnamese refugee and a Mexican immigrant, Kim Bernice Nguyen was the first in her family to graduate high school and college. At just 25, she won a historic election as the youngest person and first Latina ever elected to the Garden Grove City Council. A leader on women’s issues, Ms. Nguyen has stood up to harassment and sought equality and justice throughout Southern California and has fought to ensure that immigrants, like her parents, have the dignity and opportunity to succeed in our communities. A homegrown leader, Ms. Nguyen attended Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary, Doig Intermediate, and Santiago High School. As a healthcare expert, she will bring a much-needed public health background to Congress, having formerly worked for CalOptima and now as a Program Manager for a large health plan.
CA-45 is one of the top pickup opportunities for Democrats in 2024. It is a Biden +6 district with a Democratic registration advantage of 5.6%. Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) and Latino voters are a majority of the district at 51.6% – with Vietnamese voters making up the largest block of AAPI voters at 58.4%. If elected, Ms. Nguyen would be the first person of Vietnamese descent ever elected to Congress in California and only the third in US history. She would also be the first Asian-Latina in Congress and one of a growing group of millennials seeking to make change on our most crucial issues. Councilwoman Nguyen is the only candidate for Congress in the nation endorsed by both BOLD PAC and ASPIRE PAC, the political arms of both the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Members of Congress.
