This is a post I’ve been hounded on to write, but there aren’t any winners here at all and one real victim. So, lets review. The lede of the story is buried to the last paragraph to offer context.
It starts with James Mai, a Vietnamese-American Irvine resident and small business owner, who leads an organization called AAPI United. He serves as an at-large commissioner for County Housing and Community Development and was re-appointed by OC Supervisor Doug Chaffee last year. Mai also serves on an Irvine City Committee on Child Care issues.
At some point last fall, Mai posted offensive messages on social media claiming to have spread cow’s blood at some unnamed Indian restaurant in Orange County and also left a severed cow’s head at the place because he was somehow overcharged. None of this was true. But his private Instagram posts somehow became public and were shared with one or more Hindu/AAPI groups in Orange County who were outraged by Mai’s claims. Getting a severed cow’s head or blood is no easy task. One needs to go to a slaughterhouse in Vernon, Chino or Corona, and how to transport a severed head without making your vehicle look like a crime scene is, frankly, close to impossible. The restaurant that was soiled was never named because it doesn’t exist.
I reached out to Mai and while he doesn’t deny posting those messages, he said they were not true and the posts were “designed to expose trolls.” Mission accomplished but the “why” behind exposing trolls remains elusive. But there’s no evidence Mai fouled an Indian restaurant with cow’s blood or left a severed cow’s head behind; he just said he did and the posts – once public – fueled significant outrage of which he bears responsibility. He essentially yelled “fire” in a theater.
The person who exposed Mai’s posts is a woman known in OC as “Love Cameron.” She has blogged for the Orange Juice Blog and led an effort to recall OC DA Todd Spitzer that went nowhere.
During the course of the online back-and-forth between: Cameron, Mai, individuals associated with Hindu groups demanding Mai’s removal from County Commissions, City of Irvine committees, and allies of Mai, the story is almost impossible to follow. Cameron’s address was somehow doxed (she receives a public PO Box which conceals her actual residential address from the State’s “Safe at Home” program run by the California Secretary of State) by someone who has allied themselves with Mai. This isn’t cool for two reasons: (1) Cameron is disabled which makes her vulnerable; and (2) it violates the State policy of protecting former victims of human sex trafficking. The latter demands privacy regarding her residence. The former means she sometimes goes over the top with impatience to demand help from authorities. Mai denies doxing her but he also did nothing to tell those doxing Cameron to stop although he is part of a Housing program related to Cameron’s Section 8 housing voucher she is or was the recipient to.
Meanwhile, I continue to get email and blog comments from Amit Dave and S. Rao demanding reasons why I am not writing about the #JamesmaiHateCrime. But some individuals demanding Mai’s exposure are not angels either. Mai tells me he and his family have been receiving emails and posts with vicious messages about him and his family, calling Mai’s 12-year-old a pedophile and contacting nearby schools and daycare centers to warn them about Mai as a possible threat to children. Mai has sent me screen grabs of the posts, and I have decided not to post them or the posts targeting Cameron out of fairness to both because they are so very offensive.
And while his original posts were clearly horrible, Mai does not see it that way and told TheLiberalOC that he will not resign from his county commission post or his City of Irvine appointment. It also appears Mai’s behavior doesn’t rise to the level required for removal from these bodies, but the larger angle here is Mai’s posts and subsequent publicity may have cost Anthony Kuo, running for re-election to the Irvine City Council, and John Park, a second time candidate for Irvine City Council, votes as the pair finished third and fourth in the recent election. The candidates have some sort of ties to Mai and Mai’s AAPI United.
Getting back to Ms. Cameron, who initially gave this story to the Orange Juice Blog which ran the piece in spite of a complete lack of facts to back up the contention Mai had committed a crime, largely to shame Supervisor Doug Chaffee. Because of this relationship with that blog, Cameron retained the legal services of Gregory Diamond, the blog’s managing editor, to represent her in an Unlawful Detainer to save her Section 8 housing voucher and Diamond sent a letter to Mai to tell him to retain records and outlined the doxing.
But Cameron tells TheLiberalOC she fired Diamond after, she says, mistakes he made in filings which placed her at grave risk of losing her Section 8 Housing voucher which would leave her homeless. Diamond allegedly had Cameron sign a Stipulation to Judgment in the Unlawful Detainer which he drafted last July. Cameron says Diamond blamed these mistakes on the stroke he suffered in 2017. She looked into suing her former lawyer for legal malpractice only to discover – she says — Diamond doesn’t carry malpractice insurance as required to be disclosed in a retainer agreement (which she says he also never provided) as required by the California State Bar. She has filed complaints against Diamond with the State Bar which is communicating with her to consider opening an investigation into Diamond’s disability, claims about his lack of malpractice insurance, a lack of a retainer agreement and a demand for cash payments instead of a check or money order.
I emailed Diamond a series of questions regarding his representation of Cameron and her claims on payments, malpractice insurance, and other items that can be answered as “true/false” or “yes/no.” He refused to answer a single question and crafted a statement that isn’t relevant to this post. It was suggested to me that if Diamond draws any sort of state disability payments, earning money as a lawyer might mean he’d place those benefits at risk which would explain why he allegedly asked for payments in cash.
Diamond admonished me last fall for not “jumping on this story” because it happened in my backyard (because Mai sits on an Irvine city committee). Early inquiries revealed there is really no “there” there. Mai’s behavior is horrific, and online trolls do stupid online troll stuff, with some screen grabs suggesting trolls should pay a visit to Cameron’s home. Ms. Cameron has since moved to a new address (Privacy please). And she is working to undo the damage that was done to her and asking a judge for mercy.
Mai should – at the very least – apologize for the online posts that started this fine mess. If he doesn’t, he should be asked to resign from his county and city positions. And if he won’t, he should be removed. For those anti-Mai people, shame on you for spreading rumors about a 12-year-old boy. For Cameron, focus on your health and safety. And practice patience with those trying to help you as they are moving as fast as they can.

The Community Services Commission’s vote on James Mai’s reappointment to the Child Care Committee has been delayed until their next meeting on Feb 1st. This is a welcomed decision for which I and my community are grateful to commissioners Trussell, Hamid, Sun, and Chair Wazirnia. This gives the other local Indian Hindu American leaders a chance to get engaged actively, speak up, liaise with all the involved appointees and electeds, investigating entities, orgs, and agencies. My community needs to be fully vested in this decision, since the original issue is that of an anti-Indian, anti-Hindu hate speech social media post, allegedly posted by James Mai and perhaps his associates. Mary Cameron just happened to get caught in the middle and targeted, unfortunately, and I would like to facilitate this issue to closure for her safety.
As the new appointee by incoming councilwoman Dr. Kathleen Treseder onto the same Child Care Committee, I request to have this issue closed out with all necessary investigations completed, to be voted on with finality by this Feb 1st meeting.
I also want to offer to take the pressure off Mary Cameron by giving James Mai one chance to say what he needs/wants to say, but directly to all the Indian Hindu leaders in a Zoom meeting prior to the Feb. 1st meeting, upon completion of all requested investigations.
Regarding all those involved in conducting the investigations into Mary Cameron being cyber-bullied allegedly by James Mai and his associates, I have informed her that I’m willing to be her spokesperson as long as she tells me exactly what she wants to see happen. I’m willing to advocate for her, contingent upon clear articulation of her requests (I used to be a special education advocate for special needs’ students). We absolutely must have this issue closed out with a thoroughly deliberated and mutually beneficial outcome for all parties and victims involved by Feb. 1.

On topic of Cameron’s housing dilemma,Greg Diamond is unethical and caused legal problems for her, but her new attorney could not save her either. I question why Ms Alberts, who is facing legal action and loss of her licence realised she could not save Cameron only a few hours after this article was written. The timing is rather odd. Tammy Kim has proven to be a disappointment to us. She visited Irvine Mandir and met with temple board and got fancy photos taken in September. At the end of the day, she has not addressed James Mai and his bigotry, which is far worse than any cemetery comments from veterans.
The slagging of Cameron by trolls who are in James Mai circle needs to be properly investigated by Irvine police, but was not. I find interesting Mai is considered a city employee, it seem like they are incentivised not to investigate or condemn publicly. If he is condemned publicly, some other lawyer will come dashing up to sue. My opinion is lawyers are not held to strong enough standards and too many are out to exploit. I hope Cameron pulls her life together and stay out of politics. She is not psychologically equipped to handle the online atrocities that came her way.

Elizabeth,I’m Latina and grew up in Texas. In most Southern states law enforcement classifies everyone as either White or Black. Turks, Chinese and Hawaiian and obviously South Asian/ Indian like Cameron are White for statistical purposes. Even Hispanics are either ‘Black Hispanic’ or ‘White Hispanic’. Cameron’s address was never public record. Someone got a hold of it some way and uploaded it onto the internet. Posting someone’s protected information online does not make it public. Whoever is attacking Cameron’s character is conveniently ignoring James Mai’s known affiliation to Vietnamese street gangs. Oh,and what about all those threats from the troll calling themselves “Asian Vengeance”?
