ADEM Elections – Let the Whining Begin

On social media feeds in regards to the ADEM election results, there are two themes: gratitude for being elected or whining about losing or who was elected.

Exhibit one is above from an Anaheim Democratic Club Facebook post by Mark Richard Daniels.

Now Anaheim splits assembly districts with AD69 and AD68.  For AD68, OK blogger Greg Diamond, in a head scrather, criticizes Rep. Katie Porter for her support of the Orange to Blue slate.  He writes:   This result goes onto Rep. Katie Porter’s tab — she was a main sponsor of the “Orange to Blue” slate, which I think swept the non-female slate and swept the female seats with the exception of Baldwin beating Galindo, which seems like it may have been considered OK anyway — and when she (Porter) doesn’t get the leftist support that she thinks she’d entitled to, this will explain why.  Her (Porter) main goal has been to avoid people who might defy her.

And…

Katie: this is why the party’s left, which has its eyes on what you do, will oppose you for positions like the Senate seat.  You’ve shown repeatedly that you are a divider.

Porter is a darling of Democrats not only in Orange County but throughout the country.  My progressive high school pals from New York love Katie Porter and tell me all the time how lucky I am to have her as my Congressional rep.  So for Diamond to actually think this tells me the stroke he had has affected his logic more than I thought or he’s just dumb.

Here’s that Orange to Blue slate again.

And over for AD69, the Bernie Bros didn’t do as well as they hoped.

Diamond writes: “….the well-organized trades got a bunch of unknowns elected while excluding some excellent activists.  They have essentially told the left to piss off — and, sure enough, that will continue to be what happens in elections like the next State Senate race.

AD-69 now appears to be under complete control of the Building Trades, who in turn control the OC Labor Federation — note that Grim Gloria’s (Alvarado) total almost matches those of Martin Lopez and LuisAndresVendido Perez, whose totals probably give us a good sense of how many voters the unions turned out — and much of the “credit” for that belongs to Rep. Lou Correa, Assemblyman Tom Daly, voraciously ambitious DPOC Chair Ada Briceño, and their longtime colleagues.  (Hi, Loretta!  Hi John H.!)

Someone have Diamond evaluated for another stroke.  Or better still, ask him how many votes he got in AD55 this election?

This was an election.  If you’re a Democrat, you opt in to vote.  I registered early, got my ballot, voted and received an email confirmation my ballot was received.  I didn’t vote for the entire Orange to Blue slate — giving votes to Irvine’s Laura Bratton and Christine Dillard who were not part of this slate.  I did vote for Naz Hamid, Ashleigh Aitken, Patty Yoo and Sav Quezada (who is not a Republican plant).  I also gladly cast votes for Grant Henniger in Anaheim, Ted Perle and Ajay Mohan; I’m sorry Grant lost because I believe he has a bright future in government.

But for Tustin’s Lee Fink, who is my EBoard representative with the state party and Anaheim’s Jose Moreno, who needs to build bridges with Anaheim’s other two Democrats, are you in agreement with Mr. Diamond here?  Union’s apparently suck, Katie Porter ignores the left? Up yours to Congressman Lou Correa, State Rep. Tom Daly, and DPOC Chair Ada Briceno, plus longtime OC democratic leaders Loretta Sanchez and John Hanna?  Or with either of you speak up and say “the voters spoke.”  Or do you agree with Mark Richard Daniels with his Trumpian claim the election was rigged?

You’re both party leaders — let’s hear it gentlemen.

  1. No, the ADEMs were not rigged (and claims to the contrary are foolhardy). The party is literally uploading the ballots to the party website for everyone to see. ADEM elections were particularly challenging in 2021, and were handled about as well as could be hoped for. They remain a logistical and philosophical challenge because they were never designed for 169,000 people to vote.

I really don’t understand what Greg is saying about Katie Porter, so I’ll just state what is probably obvious: I support Katie Porter.

  2. You don’t understand what Greg’s saying about Katie? Really? C’mon Lee. I’ll break out a whiteboard for you.

  3. No, the ADEMs were not “rigged.”

Most of the folks who won in ADs throughout Orange County have large bases of grassroots support through their local Democratic clubs and social/political circles.

The majority of the people were elected because they have years of experience of knocking on doors for candidates, phone banking for candidates, speaking at public meetings and participating in Democratic activities.

Orange County is a newly-turned “Blue” County, but there’s still a lot more work to be done.

Personally, I’d like to spend my time work with Democrats to fight to get more Democrats elected, rather than fight Democrats over who is more Democratic.
