SEAL BEACH, Calif. — New polling from Goodwin Simon Research shows Josh Lowenthal leading in the 72nd Assembly district.
Fundamentally, the poll shows that Republican Tyler Diep is an exceptionally weak candidate for Assembly. In the heart of Orange County, and despite an edge in partisan registration, Diep trails Democrat Josh Lowenthal by 4 points, 47% to 43%., with that lead doubling to 8% when given positive information.
- Lowenthal starts with a 4% point lead, 47% to 43% based on ballot designation alone
- That lead doubles to 51% to 43% with short, positive paragraphs
- After more information, Lowenthal leads by 17%
Furthermore, the poll shows:
- Lowenthal starts with a lead among likely voters and expands it considerably when voters are given more information
- Independents, which make up nearly a quarter of the electorate, break decisively for Lowenthal
- Trump and his policies are a drag on the Republican candidate
- Diep was badly damaged in his primary and has nearly fatal negatives going into the general
And Lowenthal has considerable cash on hand; from earlier this month, this announcement:
As we enter the critical voter contact period of the 2018 election, Democrat Josh Lowenthal has a decisive cash-on-hand and fundraising advantage over damaged Republican Tyler Diep.
Lowenthal, raising at a pace of nearly $250,000 a month, has more than five times the cash on hand of Diep, who barely survived a bruising and divisive Republican primary.
This is bad news for Diep in a district that went 8 points for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and has seen a precipitous drop in Republican registration in the last few years. Turnout in the 2018 primary closely mirrored turnout in 2018, bad signs for Republican candidates facing organized, well-financed Democratic opponents.
Additionally, polling conducted by Goodwin Simon Strategic Research (Paul Goodwin and Amy Simon) shows the Democratic candidate in this race with a considerable 11 percentage point advantage.
Further, Josh Lowenthal is garnering support from traditional Republican organizations as well as Democrats, including business groups, Republican elected officials, public safety organizations, and others.
