Cisneros Statement on Proposed Tent City at Camp Pendleton

Fullerton, Calif. – Gil Cisneros, Fmr. Lieutenant Commander who is running for Congress in California’s 39th Congressional District, has released the following statement on the Trump administration’s proposed plan to detain nearly 47,000 migrants at a “temporary and austere” encampment at Camp Pendleton:

“The Trump administration created a humanitarian crisis when it imposed a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy at the border, and President Trump’s subsequent executive order has done nothing to resolve the situation. Now, the Trump administration is proposing the creation of ‘tent cities’ at U.S. military bases, including Camp Pendleton. Not only is this plan a gross misuse of our military’s resources and priorities, it is asking our military leaders to be responsible for the indefinite detention of immigrant families.

“As a veteran, a father, and an American, I strongly believe that the Trump administration’s actions do not represent the values that our country stands for. I visited the border at Tornillo, Texas this past weekend because I believe we must continue to speak out against the cruel and inhumane treatment of families at our border. The indefinite detention of immigrant families in tent cities is not an acceptable solution, and I’m continuing to call for the immediate reunification of children and parents and for comprehensive immigration reform that keeps families together.”

California’s 39th Congressional District, split between Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties, will be one of the most competitive districts in California. Hillary Clinton won the district by a whopping nine points, the DCCC labeled it a first-round target on its battlefield map and recently, the Cook Political Report changed the district’s status from Lean R to Toss Up.
