No Payne in CD-48; Who Will Gain

Rachel Payne

CA-48 Candidate Rachel Payne for Congress last night announced she is stepping aside, for sake of Democratic victory in June. She has not made an endorsement.

The DPOC thanked Rachel for her selfless decision and looks forward to seeing her on the campaign trail again soon.

Payne got into the race very late due to a illness with a close family member.  Had she gotten in a year earlier, things would have been very different.  She chose family over politics — and it was the smart choice.

Payne was a very compelling candidate, a tech executive who understood job creation and core progressive principles.  At the CDP convention, she joined all other candidates seeking no party endorsement for the race and delegates instead overwhelmingly backed Dr. Hans Keirstead.  While she hasn’t endorsed in the race, an argument could be made she’ll back Harley Rouda as she joined other candidates seeking no endorsement.  But there’s that tech connection that makes an alliance with Keirstead perhaps a more natural fit.

She ought to sit down with the remaining candidates before deciding where to throw her support.

I’d like to encourage Payne to seek a city council seat this fall; use it as a platform for a future run.  She has much to offer.
