Since the far right continues to misrepresent the benefits of Obamacare — correctly known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez will host a town hall on the details in Garden Grive this Saturday. The details of the event are below.
The dirty little secret about Obamacare is while Republicans hate it, more Republican families have enrolled adult children under Obamacare provisions than Democratic families according to the Daily Beast. From the story:
The Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, is starting to take effect. And here’s a shocker. While the overall legislation is wildly unpopular among Republicans—90 percent disapproved, according to a June poll—individual components seem to be catching on like wildfire among the GOP crowd.
Take, for example, the requirement that insurers continue policies to children whose parents have coverage until they turn 26. The Commonwealth Fund last week released an interesting study (PDF) of young people and Obamacare. It found that between 2011 and 2013, the number of people aged 19 to 25 who had been on a parent’s health insurance plan in the previous year rose from 13.7 million to 15 million. “Of the 15 million young adults on a parent’s plan, an estimated 7.8 million likely would not have been eligible to enroll in that plan prior to the Affordable Care Act,” the Commonwealth Fund reported. The report also found that Republicans were more into this provision of the ACA than Democrats. In March 2013, 73 percent of young Republicans surveyed had heard of the provision, compared with 63 percent of Democratic youths. Maybe it’s because they were more likely to be benefitting from the expansion. “In March 2013, 63 percent of Republican young adults had enrolled in a parents’ policy, compared with 45 percent of Democrats,” the report said.
That’s a pretty significant difference. What accounts for it? It could be that young Republicans are less likely to leave the nest and get their own jobs with benefits than young Democrats. Or it could be that Republicans simply love their kids more. But it is more likely that Republicans, being generally better off than Democrats, are more likely to have solid employer-based health insurance in the first place.

Could someone explain to me why they think having their premiums go from $503 when Obamacare passed to $830 today affordable? Could some brilliant liberal explain how paying $8,700 for premiums and out of pocket maximum in 2010 is kore expensive than the $14,000 I have paid in 2013? Would anyone consider a family of two making $50,000 rich? Isn’t it the evil rich jot poor that is suppose yo he targeted or are you all that lame?
Has anyone checked out the exchange? I liked my $2,700 deductible with $2,700 out of pocket maximum mire than the $2,700 with $4,700 my policy changed to. Affordable only for those who have never purchased it for employees and are clueless.
The California exchange od $578 is more than my original $503 a month premium and calling the rise affordable is a joke. How about the out of pocket maximum of $6,000. Good luck to the middle class person who gets ill and pays $6,000 in premiums and $6,000 in out of pocket Max for $12,000. Yep middle class can afford that. Affordable care only for those who did not read the bill.
Becky — Healthcare costs have more than doubled since 2001; Obamacare is significantly slowing down the costs of increase but they still happen due to price increases demanded by the insurance industry.
Obamacare premiums will rise; the exchanges will implode; due to insufficient numbers of the young and healthy population choosing to pay the penalty rather than signing up.
