The inevitable fallout from our revelation last week that Shawn Nelson decided to opt-in to the county defined benefit pension plan has begun. In a press statement released this morning, 4th District Orange County Supervisor candidate Harry Sidhu slammed Supervisor Shawn Nelson for opting-in to the county employee retirement system.
Below is the release:
Harry Sidhu Signs Pledge To Refuse Any Pension Benefits As A County Supervisor
Criticizes Shawn Nelson as a Hypocritical RINO (Reformer In Name Only) for Taking Lucrative County Pension
(Anaheim, CA) – Today, Anaheim Businessman and Mayor Pro Tem Harry Sidhu announced that he would not accept any pension benefits as a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
“I am seeking the office of County Supervisor to serve my community, not for personal gain,†said Sidhu. “That’s why I have signed a written Pledge of Public Service (see attached) to the people of Orange County to refuse any pension benefits as a member of the Board of Supervisors.â€
“During the June Primary campaign, my opponent, Shawn Nelson, claimed to be a strong advocate for county pension reform. However, his promises of financial reform have since rung hollow.â€
“Mr. Nelson performed his county pension flip-flop in record time,†continued Sidhu. “After only two months in office, he turned his back on North Orange County taxpayers – including his own supporters, by accepting a lucrative county government pension. Worse, Mr. Nelson has added insult to injury by taking the most lucrative “2.7% at age 55†county pension option that enables him to receive a lifetime pension payment amounting to 37% of his Supervisor’s salary – currently more than $150,000 per year, without him ever having to contribute a dime!â€
“Voters are fed up with RINOs (Reformers In Name Only) like Mr. Nelson who believe that ethical and financial standards are meant for others, not for themselves. His pension dishonesty demonstrates an appalling arrogance and contempt for the voters of North Orange County,†stated Sidhu.
“Serving on the County Board of Supervisors for 8 years is not a career and should not be rewarded with a government pension. Unlike Mr. Nelson, I will stand firm in refusing any pension benefits as our North Orange County Supervisor,†concluded Sidhu.
Harry Sidhu just got outed on Red County for accepting CalPers at the city of anaheim. This guy is a two faced hypocrite.
The difference is that Nelson campaigned against the type of pension that he took. He intentionally deceived voters to get that seat. Besides, the pensions didn’t become an issue until after the retroactive spike and after Sidhu took office. So it’s definitely not the same as Nelson getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
