You know it’s crazy election season when candidates start threatening to sue over what they say about each other. That is what seems to be happening in the 4th Supervisor’s District contest between Shawn “I got caught trying to spike my pension” Nelson and Harry Sidhu. Chris Jones of Sidhu’s campaign sent out this release on Monday.
So here’s the $100,000 question: John Moorlach will you opt-out of the county defined benefit pension plan once you are sworn in for your new term on the Board of Supervisors?
It’s time for a class war over public union pensions… Despite defined benefit (DB) pensions, like the ones public employees get, being more economically efficient and offering better returns, private employers have mostly switched to 401(k) plans, or defined contribution (DC) plans, because they’re cheaper. Between 1979 and 2001, the portion of the workforce covered by defined benefit pensions dropped by half. By 2008, only 20 percent of private workers had such a pension.
It was a rare sight. A group of county supervisors and labor leaders sitting across the table from each other at a public meeting having a calm discussion, even offering each other complements. There was no shouting, no finger pointing and even the posturing was kept to a relative minimum.

Shawn Nelson had the opportunity, as did Pat Bates and John Moorlach at the time they were elected as County Supervisors, to choose whether to opt in to the County Retirement system. Both Shawn Nelson and John Moorlach made the choice, despite their very vocal opposition to public employee pension plans, to take the very benefit they so strongly oppose.
