Tan Nguyen – Back in the News

Tan Nguyen, the Republican challenger to Loretta Sanchez in 2006 who’s defaced campaign signs helped launch TheLiberalOC.com, is back. In the news anyway. Martin Wisckol over at Total Buzz has the story on the latest motion filed in his battle against federal charges related to his failed campaign.

For those of you who do not remember Nguyen’s campaign sent out mailers, fraudulently claiming to be from the California Coalition for Immigrant Reform group, advising Latino voters that they faced arrest and jail time if they voted. Nguyen claimed it was a translation error and the case was investigated as possible voter intimidation directed at Latino voters.  While the state failed to file charges federal investigators did, accusing Nguyen of obstruction of justice.

In the latest motion posted here by the Register, Nguyen’s attorney asks that the entire case be thrown out because, in his opinion, the search warrants were improperly issued. Nguyen’s trial is set for Feb. 9 before District Court Judge David O. Carter. According to Wisckol, Steward’s motion is tentatively set to be heard Jan. 18.
