Quirk Decides To Run For Duvall’s Seat

Governor Schwarzenegger announced today the date of the Special Election to fill the open 72nd Assembly seat vacated by former Republican Assemblyman Mike Duvall after a sex scandal. The General Election will be held on January 12th if things are not decided in the Primary Election November 17th. Candidates will have until October 5th to decide if they are going to run.

Total Buzz reported earlier today:

Several politicians are said to be considering a run Duvall’s 72nd Assembly District seat, although two big hitters in the Republican Party have already declared their candidacy: Linda Ackerman, a California representative on the Republican National Committee and the wife of former Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman, and OC Supervisor Chris Norby. John MacMurray, a Democrat, has also declared.

Considering runs, or rumored to be considering runs, include (deep breath) former Placentia City Councilman Scott Brady, Placentia Councilman Scott Nelson, 20-year-old Placentia Councilman Jeremy Yamaguchi, Anaheim City Councilman Harry Sidhu, City of Orange Mayor Carolyn Cavecche and GOP activist Richard Rios.

Last week I reported that Sharon Quirk had told me that she was not going to run for the open 72nd Assembly seat vacated by disgraced Republican Assemblyman Mike Duvall. I heard from Sharon this afternoon that she will be running after all.

When we talked last week she had been considering a run but decided against it. Apparently that decision only enhanced the efforts of her constituents to convince her to run. Fullerton makes up a large portion of the district and Sharon was the highest vote getter in the 2008 City Council election. Sharon has a strong and positive reputation in Fullerton and that, coupled with good name recognition, should help in a special election.

We will be talking with Sharon and John MacMurray, the other democrat in the race, and we’ll bring you those interviews as soon as we have them.

Although her website is currently being updated, Sharon has some information up now that you may want to check out at www.SharonQuirk.com. Here is her press announcement that was released late Tuesday evening.
