Los Alamitos Mayor to Resign?

Via Calitics, I found this from the paper that occasionally notices that we exist whenever we have “big news”:

Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose has announced that he will resign over a controversy that has sparked charges of racism from an e-mail photo he sent out this week depicting a superimposed watermelon patch in front of the White House.

Grose said in an e-mail sent to the Orange County Register on Thursday that he will resign at Monday’s City Council meeting.

“The attention brought to this matter has sadly created an image of me which is most unfortunate,” Grose wrote. “I recognize that I’ve made a mistake and have taken steps to make sure this is never repeated.”

So is this good news? Is this a victory for common decency? We don’t know yet. I haven’t yet seen if Dean Grose will resign from Los Alamitos City Council or simply resign his ceremonial duties as Mayor and remain on the council.

So what is it, Los Al? Is inflammatory racism “only bad enough” to require a slap on the wrist, or can the people in this city really expect better from their elected officials?

  1. As I said on my own blog, I won’t pretend that I’m appalled.

    In fact, I’m delighted.

Once again, Orange County’s Republican officials have exposed themselves as among the most racist, and moronic, politicians in the country.

If I were a Republican, I’d be deeply embarrassed.

    But I’m not.

No doubt the Orange County Republican Party will find another brilliant public servant to take his place.

  2. Looks like Mayor McRacist is planning to resign ONLY his ceremonial position as Mayor. Reports on KCAL9 say that he intends to stay on the council.
So I guess it’s not OK to have a guy who sends out racist email “jokes” call the meeting to order, but it’s find to have the clown as a councilman.
Call Los Alamitos City Hall and DEMAND that Dean Grose resign his council seat!

  3. He will only resign his ceremonial post not his council seat.

Grose is also a director on League of California Cities Orange County Division and Southern California Association of Governments. He will still retain those leadership positions. In the SCAG position his actions represent the communities of Cypress, La Palma and Los Alamitos. Mr. Grose will continue have many opportunities to promote his beliefs and approach to diversity.

As I remember, Mr. Grose was a moving force on the “In God We Trust” movement and led the firing of a City Manager after she was only given couple of months on the job.

  4. You are right, a public apology and resignation (at whatever level) is not enough. Wow, let’s get real. The guy is a loser and made a monumental mistake. Hanging him will not fix the situation and promote tolerance. At least he did not lie and he is acknowledging guilt of his blunder quickly. Slow down people and think about the long-term implications of what you are pushing.
