While I’m still waiting for my copy of the New Yorker to show up in my mailbox, I have to wonder if the railing about it means some liberals have totally lost their sense of humor. Radio talker Randi Rhodes was simply outraged yesterday. She’s totally over-reacting.
I thought it was a funny cover and if there was a cover for Liberals to get bent out of shape about, it would be the one where Hillary is in bed with Barack and both of them are reaching for that ringing phone at 3AM.
Here’s the Democratic Response, from BarelyPolitical.com:

The folks at the Seattle Newspaper must feel the flap over the New Yorker is no big deal as they came up with this gem.
Please note that burning Constitution in the lower right hand corner.

Yeah I don’t get all the outrage over the New Yorker cover, I think it was hilarious. Thom Hartmann was ranting against it yesterday morning too – explaining that it “doesn’t work as satire” because it doesn’t have “context” – The context is obviously the Presidential campaign and the media coverage of it! He went on to say that it WOULD be funny, have context, and work as satire, if the terrorist domestic Obama scene were inside a thought bubble of some ignorant-looking redneck. Well, I am just glad that Thom Hartmann is a great informative talk show host and we’re not depending on him for our humor and satire.
(new anti-spam word Barbaro? what’s up with that?)
I got the joke of the New Yorker, but I also know that I am not most of America. Therefore thinking in my “most of America” shoes, it was one of the worst decisions ever made by the New Yorker. Most people will not realize that it is satirical thus feeding into all the fears that some have about Obama. I just think it was a totally stupid move.
Eric, come on, we’re not that much smarter than “Most America.” More informed perhaps, but they Americans know satire and sarcasm – Seinfeld, the Simpsons, and South Park have been extremely popular for decades. Any rubes dumb enough to take that cover literally probably won’t run across a New Yorker magazine anyway. And the New Yorker can’t be walking around on eggs thinking how they might be misinterpreted and still be the edgy New Yorker we love! (Also remember, they’re not necessarily a Democratic Party organ, liberal as they might swing.)
Has anyone here even watched Obama’s response on Larry King Live? He could care less about this tripe.
How ironic the idiots on the right are laughing so much about a cartoon in which its only intent is to show how stupid they are.
That’s a relief, RHackett. I was under the impression his campaign was freaking out about it. Guess it was just those dopey out-of-control surrogates.
Come-on … it was a calculated move (TROJAN HORSE) to advance the lies, racism & fear-mongering about Senator Obama & his family to the NYer readership – who are likely not Fox News followers …
