When I got home last night and opened my email I found a message from Logan Neighborhood activist Joe Andrade with a subject line that read “Destruction of the Logan Neighborhood by Ware Continues”. I immediately opened the email, which was sent to the Mayor, City Councilmembers and high level city staff as well, and I was shocked by what I read. It appears as if Judy Ware and Ware Disposal are continuing to thumb their noses at city laws and ordinances and are defiantly giving the taxpayers of Santa Ana the middle finger.
Andrade, who has valiantly followed in his mother “Chepa’s” footsteps, along with Sam Romero and others have continually fought to make the Logan Neighborhood a better place to live. For those that do not know, Logan is the oldest neighborhood in Santa Ana with residents that can trace their roots there back into the 1800’s and was one of the few areas in Orange County in which Latino’s could live. Many years ago the city fathers decided to turn Logan into a mixed use neighborhood consisting of both industrial and residential uses.
It looked like Logan had turned the corner and was on its way to improvement considering the obstacles it faced being a mixed use neighborhood until Judy Ware and Ware Disposal turned everything on its head. Ware has long owned property in the Logan area and has been a constant source of problems for the residents, but last fall she and her company bought up more property in the area and expanded their operations. Despite not having the proper permits to use the land she bought for her trash company she has done it anyway and made the lives of Andrade and company a pure hell.
It looked like some progress was being made when Ware’s case was sent to the City Attorney’s office. After yeoman’s work by code enforcement officials under the direction of Bruce Dunhams to put together a case against Ware it looked as if Joe and his neighbors were going to finally get the relief and justice they deserved. Yesterdays email from Joe tells me that I was wrong about that. I would like to share that email with all of you so you can see just how desperate things have become for Joe and the Logan Neighborhood.
Here is the text of that email:

Great job tracking Ware, Sean. I urge all Liberal OC readers to buy a recent book on Logan’s history I reviewed for the Weekly and learn about one of OC’s most vibrant, longstanding communities.
Hey Gustavo – nice swipe at the New Urbanists.
Those New Urbanists want a place where people can walk to the store, and take the bus to work nearby, just like the people in a barrio or ghetto do, but without the old residents.
I was at a community meeting in the Logan neighborhood about this issue last night, and from what other residents had to say, I can confirm this. There was a sense that the City Attorney would not be moving forward, or that the case would have to be rethought extensively before being brought forward, resulting in long long delays. Logan is of course, also under pressure by the “Renaissance Specific Plan” to gentrify the area. Michele Martinez will be hosting a meeting on this issue on Jan 17 6:30-8:30pm at St.Josephs. Some people have been told this meeting will be at the Train Station, but I saw a mailer last night that said St.Josephs. -james
Sean, thank you for the update on Ware Disposal and how Santa Ana city leaders continue to screw the Logan neighborhood.
I would not classify Logan as mixed-use in the same way that many urban areas have mixed-use neighborhoods. Mixed-use usually includes residential mixed with commercial.
What genius approved putting industrial uses, like Ware Disposal, in a residential neighborhood?
Sean,
Did Sal vote to allow Ware to do business on their new properties in Logan? Did the rest of the Council? Did Ware have to seek a variance?
Isn’t it true that Ware had reserved a spot for Sal at their table at the Truman dinner? Can you confirm that?
Has Vince Sarmiento accepted money from Ware? Has Claudia Alvarez? Has Miguel Pulido? Isn’t Sal allied with all of them?
Isn’t it true that you would never have gone after Ware if they had not gone after Sal in last year’s Council race? Didn’t you write that on my blog? I know you told me so on the phone.
If Ware was to start contributing to Sal’s reelection would he accept their blood money like the rest of the Council has? I bet he would.
Get a sense of how this future looks in the eyes of … somebody … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CaHUqjcALY … who made this? Looks kinda costly. -james
Art,
No one has voted to allow them to do anything. They have not applied for or sought any variances or CUP’s that I am aware of. Judy Ware does as she pleases.
I didn’t go to the Truman dinner so I don’t know anything about it.
I went after Ware because they are destroying the quality of life for the residents of Logan. I have known Sam Romero for over twenty years and I consider him a friend. Sam, along with Joe Andrade, told me about what Ware was doing and I felt obligated to help my friend in any way rhat I could.
The fact that Judy Ware helped fund the slanderous attacks against Sal was just icing on the cake, but it was by no means the motivating factor for me.
What has your girl Michele done about Ware other than throw a fit because I exposed the violations on the OJ? She likes to tell the story about how she told me to give the books to Joe and not blog about them, but that is a flat out lie. She never said a word to me about those books, her young friend Mario was the one who gave them to me. When her buddies on the 8th Floor said something to her about it she decided to try and throw me under the bus.
She made a fool of herself by leaving a raving message on Joe Andrade’s voice mail about the whole issue. She was screaming like a lunatic, I know because I heard the message. It sure wasn’t a very dignified way for an elected official to act.
Before you come on here and try and slander Sal, do yourself a favor and ask Michele what she has done. What is she doing other than paying lip service to the folks in Logan? She just loves Dave Ream and Ream won’t do anything about Ware. So just whose side is she on. Why doesn’t she say something to Judy herself, afterall they both sit on the board of directors at the Boys and Girls Club.
Sean,
Tell me. What has Sal done? NADA. He has NEVER voted against any of Pulido’s crappy ideas. He has voted right along with the Space Commander, every single time. Michele at least has the huevos to vote against these idiots. She is the ONLY progressive on the Council.
Face it. The only thing Sal did to mollify you was put you on the Planning Commission. Other than that he has done absolutely NOTHING to change Santa Ana. Not one damn thing. Show me otherwise Sean. You can’t and you know it.
The fact is, Michele is no protector of Ware. She has taken the sensible position that the city attorney is in charge of the investigation. If he is not doing his job, then maybe your boy Sal ought to tell Pulido and the rest of their cabal to do something about it. But wait, they have ALL taken money from Ware. Your boy Sal is ALLIED with the very people that Ware has put in power all these years. It is enough to make me puke.
Stop attacking Michele. It just sickens me that you keep doing that. You were on her advisory committee! At the time you warned us not to allow Julie Stroud on the committee because she was a spy. In fact, you turned out to be the spy!
I am saddened that you could be bought off by a paltry commission appointment. I hope it was worth it to you. These appointments mean NOTHING and you know it.
We won’t bring change to our city until we throw the bums out! Pulido needs to go. So do all the rest of the Council Members. And that is the ONLY way we will at last get rid of Dave Ream.
BTW, your boy Sal voted to extend Ream’s contract too, didn’t he? Give me a break Sean. He is no revolutionary. He is just a power hungry ass who is doing NOTHING to help the people of our city. When will you finally realize that?
I never would have though that the Sean Mill I knew could be bought off with a damn commission appointment. That is just tragic. Sean, wake up and realize that you are now part of the very same establishment that has ruined our city. I cannot believe you are OK with that…
This is way off topic. Is this about Logan still or something else?
12:14,
Good question. It was never about Logan for Sean. It was about political payback for his boy Sal Tinajero. Don’t believe the spin on this one.
Let me put this another way, why is Sean calling out Michele instead of calling out the Councilman he reports to? My guess is that Sean knows Sal and Pulido and the rest of their crooked cabal are the real ones doing nothing about Ware. Sean is just using this story to continue his attacks on the only progressive on the SA Council…Michele Martinez.
“hey art and sean”-
Good question. It’s really too bad that Art only comes here to bash Sean and dig up old accusations that are completely off-topic.
Sean-
Thanks for the interesting report on Ware Disposal and the Logan neighborhood. Before you came here to blog about this, I had no idea that any of this was even happening. Keep up the good work, and hopefully Logan residents will get their community back.
Andrew,
My friend that is a low blow. The fact is, Sean bashes the only progressive on the Santa Ana Council – Michele Martinez – on a very regular basis, right here on your blog. It is just disgusting to see him do it again and again. I hope you are proud of that.
The fact is, Sal Tinajero has done NOTHING to separate himself from Pulido and his crooked cabal. Martinez has voted several times against these crooks. Tinjaero is now a reliable vote FOR Pulido and his schemes. It is a sad fact.
I considered Sean to be a friend. But he has turned his back on change in my city, in return for a commission appointment. That is why he was so mad at me when I resigned my commission, in protest against what Sal Tinajero did to Thomas Gordon. I showed that these commission posts have NO value. They are not about true change.
I hope that Sean will wake up at some point and realize he has sold out the revolution in return for a speck of power. He is capable of so much more.
Andrew, I know you are a true progressive. Please don’t drown in this anti-Michele spin.
As for Ware Disposal, can you confirm that they had a seat at their table reserved for Sal Tinajero at the Truman dinner? Apparently he did not show up. But my sources tell me he would have sat with Judy Ware and company.
Art-
I’m sorry if you took that the wrong way. It’s just that I’ve had enough of the bizarre fight between you and Sean. Must this same damn fight happen in every thread of Sean’s?
You know I wholeheartedly support Michele Martinez. However, I also support Sean’s right to offer his point of view. Just because he doesn’t agree with me and Chris and Gila and Heather and Bill and Dan 100% of the time doesn’t mean that we at TheLiberalOC.com will censor Sean.
And oh yes, SEAN IS NOT SAL! You seem to blame every one of Sal Tinajero’s iniquities on Sean. Why? Maybe you should remember that Sean may not always agree 100% with Sal.
You’re not helping your cause by badmouthing other concerned Santa Ana residents. So can we please put an end to the mudslinging? Thanks.
Sal AND Michelle have done NOTHING for Logan.
The City Attorney takes direction from the City Council and neither Sal of Michelle have publicly demanded that immediate action take place to stop Ware’s illegal activities and improve the Logan neighborhood’s quality of life.
Sean AND Art are both blindly defending Sal and Michelle, respectively, after they gave each of them an ounce of attention.
IF the RSP is adopted the Ware’s commercial operation will be push out in the not so distance future.
Why doesn’t the neighborhood association sue the business(‘s) for damaging the residential community?
Is the OC Weekly’s exposé on the RSP and the ward 3 councilmember, really funded by the land owners and business’s of Logan and Lacy.
Who has the most to gain if RSP is not adopted?
Cook: You know very well that the Weekly’s prime funding comes from sex ads, so you can stop your conspiracies right there1
Gustavo: finally a reason to brag about the fact that the Weekly has so many sex ads!
Andrew,
I will be happy to lay off Sean when he stops picking on Michele.
Art, get out of the kiddies’ sandbox and go back to exposing the corruption in Santa Ana and Orange County. That is why people began reading Orange Juice.
Art AND Sean’s blatant bias towards their respective Santa Ana councilmembers ruins their credibility. Yes, people read your posts, but people also read tabloid rags. It’s not out of respect, but out of curiosity.
Judy Ware & her companies have given a lot of money to politicians. The recent Santa Ana Measure D was reported in the Orange County Register where Ware Disposal Companies gave $20,000. Ben Ware (Judy’s Husband) & Jay Ware (Judy’s Son) have given $2,600 in total to the party of John McCain as reported here http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/neighbors.php?type=name&lname=Ware.
