Free movie screening: Jesus Camp

This Saturday there will be a free screening of the movie “Jesus Camp” at Grace Church in Huntington Beach. Here’s the information:

JESUS CAMP SCREENING & DISCUSSION

SYNOPSIS:

Jesus Camp is a 2006 documentary about a “charismatic Christian” summer camp for children who spend their summers learning and practicing their prophetic gifts and being taught that they can “take back America for Christ.” According to the distributor, it “doesn’t come with any prepackaged point of view”, and it tries to be “an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the evangelical Christian community”. On January 23, 2007, “Jesus Camp” was nominated for the 79th Annual Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Documentary Feature.

FREE SCREENING:

Grace Church of Huntington Beach is inviting the community to join us for a free screening on Saturday, March 17th, at 7:15pm. It will be held at Grace Church at 6931 Edinger Ave. (near Goldenwest). You might consider visiting our new Saturday Night Service that goes from 6pm-7pm as a way of experiencing a typical evangelical worship gathering, but that is not required or expected.

DISCUSSION:

Following the screening, around 8:45pm, Senior Pastor Dave Housholder will lead a discussion of questions raised in the film including the following:

How should we talk to our kids about God?
Do Christians worship George W. Bush?
Should church and politics mix?
Do zealous Christians scare you?
Why are the kids so emotional?
Do churches brainwash?
And Your Questions!

Cynics and politically-minded individuals are especially encouraged to attend!

Visit www.GraceHB.org for all the details including a trailer of the film.

This was a very good movie, and I think that the discussion afterward could prove to be very insightful. If any of you plan on going, let me know.

  1. while i appreciate that the makers of Jesus Camp let interviewees do all the talking, they were obviously selective about what they let into the final movie release; over all, there is some useful truth in this flick… as long as it’s taken with a grain (or maybe a bucket) of salt
