Lies, Damn Lies and Campaign Mailers

I’m told by those who make their living in politics that you only go negative when your positives cannot go higher. Looks like Team Irvine has hit its limit.

Exhibit A is a Pro-Measure 90 Mailer from the Official Non-Partisan Voter Guide of California (non-partisan= lie #1, it’s partisan Republican).

I am always amazed how every Irvine election has to do with Larry Agran even if he’s not on the ballot. Since Larry got the most votes of any council candidate last time around, you would think these people would have learned.

Lie #2: “For more than 20 years, Irvine politician Larry Agran has been trying to foce his vision of a high density, rent-subsidized (that’s a code word for not affluent/Dan) Irvine on half a million people down the throats of the citizens of Irvine.” (Irvine has 180,000 people; the city’s original master plan called for an eventual population of up to a half-million but then city councilor and current city council candidate Mary Ann Gaido (and others) successfully pushed forward a slow growth initiative. Irvine might hit 250,000 sometime in the next 15 years, but a half million is not believable.).

Lie #3: the claim that Agran, Krom and Kang want to place tens of thousands of low income rental units (there’s those words again) at the Great Park in the former El Toro airbase (guess these guys missed the guided tour of the Great Park last weekend ..I’m sure Lennar will be very surprised at this plan).

Lie #4: Agran, Krom, Kang and Gadio…. oppose Proposition 90 becuase it will stop them from bulldozing your home or business to remake Irvine into their bold vision of a high density high rise utopia serviced by government run trains and buses. C’mon Team Irvine, you can’t honestly say that with a straight face. This is simply a fantasy on the part of the people who put this flier together. It’s also evidence that all this ticket has to sell is FEAR. Can the Republicans honestly run on anything but FEAR? And once the make you afraid of it, then they point of finger of blame. The idea of Larry in a hard hat makes me giggle.

Lie #5: In their (Agran et al) vision of Irvine, you won’t be able to find a place to park. You’ll have to take the bus or ride your bike (what, no horses?/Dan). And you may not even be able to keep your house.

Team Irvine, have you no decency? Have you no shame? Is your quest for power so great that you will say anything to win? This flier convicts you.

Rep. John Campbell and Assemblyman Chuck DeVore are featured on the piece as well. Its says “Campbell is working in Washington for limited government, less spending and lower taxes (too bad spending is out of control and government is larger than it’s ever been and tax cuts were achieved without his help..is that 3 strikes or just 2?).

I generally respect Chuck even though we disagree politically (our kids are in the same grade at Northwood High School) but even he has to be embarrassed by this flier.

  1. I thought mailers weren’t effective Dan? What are you worried about? The fact that you’re squealing as loud as you are about this flyer says to me that we hit paydirt. Oh and Hometown Crony Guide was the first to go negative. The gloves are off and this is going to be a battle for the hearts and minds of Irvine voters(who are more Republican/conservative than liberal 🙂 Ciao

  2. Allan —
this one is so loaded with lies about what the Krom ticket will do that your party should be ashamed. If you’re goal was to spread FEAR, well, that’s all you have to sell. The concept of a high road, issues-only campaign has elluded you and I guess the truth doesn’t matter. This flier confirms for me why these people are unfit for office. Any office.

  3. Hmmm… So Shea and her GOPer buddies are now trying to dupe Irvine voters into the taxpayer trap (Prop 90), AND make this a referendum on Larry Agran?!

    OH, PUH-LEEESE!

    1. Prop 90 would do away with all those environmental and land use ordinances that Irvine seems to like quite well (or at least, make it much more difficult to do).

    2. Obviously, Irvine voters must like Larry Agran if they KEEP REELECTING HIM to city council!

Wow… Perhaps if this were a different year, I’d we worried about a probable radical-right majority on the Irvine council…

But this year, it looks like the “Great Park Team” is on its way to at least two homeruns (hopefully, three!).

  4. Larry Agran…issue campaign? Not in your life. He is the biggest fear monger of them all Dan.

May I suggest a friendly wager Dan on who might win the majority on the Council?

  5. Funny, I work in Irvine and never dreamed it could be a socialist utopia. How can I ensure we create this high rise city center with government run trains and busses?
