Porter Earns Every Major Editorial Board Endorsement Yet in CA Gov Race
“Her combination of policy smarts, political courage and independence puts her in the best position to pursue the evidence-based solutions California needs to thrive. Porter deserves your vote.”
SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco Chronicle today endorsed Katie Porter to be California’s next Governor, joining every other major California editorial board that has endorsed in this race by backing Porter’s gubernatorial bid. The board pointed to Porter’s policy plans and experience, and her refusal to take corporate money, as characteristics that stand out from the other candidates.
“Unlike our current governor, we believe Porter would be laser-focused on Californians, not on her next job,” the Chronicle Editorial Board wrote. “Her combination of policy smarts, political courage and independence puts her in the best position to pursue the evidence-based solutions California needs to thrive. Porter deserves your vote.”
The board also threw cold water on worries from Democrats that there will be a Republican lockout, saying: “Hilton has been slowly consolidating conservative support while Bianco fades. At least one Democrat is sure to make the general election.”
And they raised concerns with the other Democrats in the race, saying Xavier Becerra doesn’t have the potential to rise to the challenge of governing California. They said “Becerra seems more interested in chasing votes than offering honest solutions” and called out Tom Steyer for a “showy, self-funded campaign” that is “a hodgepodge of populist slop.” The editorial board also criticized Matt Mahan for being “dependent on Big Tech money.”
Meanwhile, the Board wrote that “Californians would have no such cause for skepticism with former Rep. Katie Porter, who brings most of Mahan’s policy chops to the table without any questions of independence. Her campaign declines corporate money, relying instead on over 46,000 small donors at last count.”
“At her core, Porter is a wonk with an independent streak and a holistic view of governance and leadership. She has an evidence-based, multitiered plan to bring down housing construction costs by 20% that experts say is actually feasible. And, importantly, she has a pragmatic view of how to work with the Legislature and statewide stakeholders to effectuate her plans.”

The San Francisco Chronicle joins the Bay Area Reporter and McClatchy California, which includes the Sacramento Bee and four other major newspapers across the state, in endorsing Porter’s candidacy. Editorial Boards across California agree that Porter is the best candidate to take on California’s cost challenges, just as she showed in numerous televised debates over the past month — receiving widespread praise from voters and pundits alike.
