CWA District 9 Backs Katie for Her Experience Taking on Donald Trump and Special Interests

Porter Has Most Organized Labor Support in the Race

IRVINE—Today, Communications Workers of America (CWA) District 9 endorsed former Congresswoman Katie Porter for California Governor. CWA District 9, which has tens of thousands of members in California, is Porter’s eleventh labor endorsement—the most out of any candidate in the race for Governor.

“It is time for a Governor who won’t hesitate to stand up for workers and families no matter what,” said CWA District 9 Vice President Frank Arce. “Katie has proven time and again that she is unafraid to take on special interests and the Trump Administration to defend the rights of Californians. She has a record of calling out big corporations and lowering costs for Californians, including by helping deliver billions for affordable, high-speed broadband across the state. CWA District 9 and our thousands of members are proud to endorse her candidacy for Governor, and we look forward to partnering with her to deliver for Californians.”

Katie has the strongest labor record in this race. She has repeatedly defended labor rights that are under attack by the Trump Administration and voted to protect workers in Congress. Since running for office in 2018, she has stood alongside labor unions and striking workers across California fighting for a more fair and just economy.

“Communications workers deliver essential services for Californians, keeping our communities connected, maintaining critical infrastructure, and supporting our economy,” said Katie Porter. “They deserve a Governor who will have their back and fight for a more affordable California. I’m honored to receive the endorsement of CWA District 9. Together, we’ll fight for workers and deliver lower costs for California families.”

Despite her opponents already spending millions on paid advertising, including billionaire Tom Steyer who spent over $133 million in the past five months, Porter remains tied as the top Democrat in the race—without spending a dime on advertising until last week. She has the highest favorability and name ID of the field and enters the last six weeks of this race with the strength and momentum needed to win on June 2nd. Last week, Porter raised over $1 million from grassroots donors and surpassed more than 100,000 individual donors to her campaign.

Katie has the largest grassroots coalition and by far the most organized labor support in the race. CWA District 9 joins a growing group of unions supporting Katie’s campaign, including: Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), California Conference of Machinists, California Federation of Labor, IBEW Local 441, National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), Orange County Employees Association (OCEA),  Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transit Workers Union (SMART), Teamsters California, UNAC/UHCP, and United Auto Workers (UAW). Porter also has the most congressional support in the race, picking up an endorsement from Congressman Robert Garcia yesterday.
