County Certifies Vet’s Cemetery Referendum; Irvine City Council Decides Process Forward on Jan 9

The note below is from Ed Pope, an Irvine resident and Veteran who lead the fight to have Irvine voters — not FivePoint — decide where the Veteran’s Cemetery and Memorial goes.  The Irvine City Council must act at the January 9 city council meeting and watch developer FivePoint get ready to spend millions to slander Pope, Larry Agran and all who stand in their way of massive profits.  If the LandSwap had not happened, construction and site clean up would already be underway at the ARDA site.

Here’s the note from Pope:

“Our first battle to Save the Veterans Cemetery in the Great Park was to gather the required 12,000 signatures to qualify the Referendum Petition.  With the help of our amazing supporters, we turned in more than 19,000 signatures in just 28 days.

Yesterday, the Orange County Registrar of Voters announced our second win – verifying that we had submitted enough valid Petition signatures to qualify for the ballot.  The Referendum will ask voters if they want a massive commercial development on Great Park property near Irvine Blvd. rather than a Veterans Cemetery.

The next battle will take place at the January 9th city council meeting when the City Clerk is required to certify to the City Council the results.

At the meeting, the Irvine City Council can vote to repeal its previous action.  Or, Councilmembers can put the Referendum on the ballot for Irvine voters to decide in an upcoming special or regular election.

Please join us at the January 9th city council meeting to show your support for the Veterans Cemetery in the Great Park and to encourage the council to immediately repeal its October 10th commercial re-zoning of Great Park property and the associated land-swap scheme with developer FivePoint.”

  1. “These facts have repeatedly been made clear to this reporter. It should also be noted that Agran used dozens of paid out-of-town petition signature gatherers who routinely lied to Irvine residents in order to get their signatures, saying that this was a petition for a veterans job center and that it was to prevent veterans’ bodies from being moved to a new location. The petition signature gatherers also used the American Legion logo without permission and continued to do so even after the American Legion told them to
stop. It should also be noted that the petition signature gatherers threatened and assaulted residents who disagreed with them, including Councilmember Melissa Fox and Commissioner Lauren Johnson-Norris.“
