After the last election, Irvine Republicans openly chortled about the Irvine Community News & Views, asking when this publication that was originally a slate mailer/newspaper, would publish again. To their astonishment, Irvine Community News & News is still publishing and attracting advertisers. It’s also easier to find in Irvine than OC Weekly is. But now that this publication is in fact a real newspaper, Irvine Council member Christina Shea, wants to censor it.
She tried to have the publication pulled from the local Albertson’s from her Quail Hill neighborhood. She left this comment on Facebook on June 13:
Tonight I was shopping at Albertsons in Quail Hill after my six mile run…no sightings of rattlesnakes today…I was leaving the store and on the news rack was… the phoney (sic) Community News and Views fake newspaper ..which for years was published by the Agran Political Team. The front page had a picture of me and Mayor Choi and states City Council cuts Irvine’s minimum wage…really.? Not true …we didn’t cut the minimum wage in Irvine. Just more of their continual dishonesty.. I spoke to the store manager and told him it wasn’t a legitimate newspaper and he removed them from the rack. I asked him to please call corporate headquarters and have all Albertsons notified they are just political hit pieces created to look like a newspaper.
We’ve called the Albertson’s in Quail Hill and at their corporate headquarters to tell them not to censor the news, but this was a legitimate source of community news in Irvine.
What Shea failed to realize is in killing Irvine’s Living Wage law, that is in fact cutting Irvine’s minimum wage and its completely accurate. I’ll take it a step further, since the Living wage law most helped those at the bottom of the socio-economic scale, we’re looking at Latino and Asian immigrants who benefits directly from the high wage that didn’t hurt Irvine voters in the least. Shea led an effort that demonstrated economic racism against these lower class Asian and World economies.
The Irvine News & Reviews reports on stores, publishes a community calendar, covers high school sports and sells ads. Because it’s critical of Shea and her Republican allies, it’s a “fake” newspaper. If you’re looking for “fake newspapers” at Albertson’s Ms. Shea, we suggest “Weekly World News and “The Star.” I hear Caitlin Jenner is giving free fashion tips there.
Anywho, we’ve contacted Albertson’s corporate headquarters to assure them its a legitimate paper and one we like seeing at the store.
Come on Dan, get into the right cosmos on this one. Your Irvine Community News and Views has never been and is currently nothing more than a third rate propaganda sheet which continues the spread of Larry Agran falsehoods across Irvine. To try and compare it to a legit newspaper is like trying to compare Barack Obama to Ronald Reagan. The political season is over, you guys lost big time, so give it a rest. There is always 2016 and who knows, if the Republicans don’t get the job done (they are) the Agranistas can always try and make a comeback?
You and your friends lost at the State audit committee today, for a second time and now you create a dialogue suggesting I have no rights to share my thoughts, or concerns about a phony newspaper, that is really a political hit piece?
Your commentary is becoming very stale, and desperate.
Perhaps adding some creative hobbies to your daily routine could create a bit more balance in your life?

Uh, the request by Rep. Gonzalez, whom you falsely identified as a former GAFCON employee, was withdrawn. So the agenda item was pulled and not voted on (see my post from this morning), so my friends and I didn’t lose anything and I’ll note your “victory” was a two vote margin in one house of the legislature.
You have every right to share your thoughts and opinions, but the newspaper is not phony by any stretch. It’s published in print and online; it accepts advertising, and it publishes a community calendar. Because it’s critical of you, it’s phony? Funny, I don’t remember ever reading that Krom, Kang or Agran wanted OCWeekly pulled from racks because it was critical of them. Try to remember the bad editorials you got in the LA Times when you were Mayor. Perhaps you should research the history of newspapers in this country and the partisan nature behind them.
My commentary is stale? Why read it then? Creative hobbies? Glad you asked, I have plenty of things that keep me busy including my wife, my kids, my friends, the two businesses I own and a new one I’m a partner in. There’s my workout group, the books I’m reading and stirring the pot.
Keep making it easy for me Ms. Shea; I’m not nearly done with writing about you and its just a matter of building up the documentation to back up everything I say. Don’t worry, I’m lawyered up too.
