Swift Pivots from CA-40 to State Assembly

And the number of Democrats running for Congress in CA-40 just shrunk.  Paula Swift has read the tea leaves and announced she’s dropping out of the CA-40 race to run for State Assembly instead.

Here’s her announcement:

With the successful passing of Prop 50 moving district lines, I’m pivoting to run for State Assembly to unseat Republican Tri Ta.
He’s voted against worker protections, earned one of the lowest environmental scores in the legislature, and backed policies that fail real small businesses.
Our community deserves leadership that fights for people, not special interests!
There is real work to do, and I’m ready to get it done

This is a smart move on her part and we wish her well.

  1. I really wish she’d run for school board or City Council. She’s got a great story and needs support. Instead, she’s being pushed to run in a race where her chances to win are slim. This isn’t how a bench of qualified, diverse candidates are built.

  2. I was really struck by Swift’s move to drop out of the CA-40 race. With Prop 50 shaking things up, her decision to take on Tri Ta seems strategic but I wonder if she’s ready for the uphill battle.
