Dave Min Wins CA-47; Mike Levin Wins CA-49 (Update with comments from Levin)

Dave Min and Daughter

Time to call him “Congressman-elect Dave Min.”  Here’s the press release announcing his win:

IRVINE, CA —Today, Dave Min was declared the winner of the highly contested race for Congress in California’s 47th Congressional District by Decision Desk HQ. The former UC Irvine Law Professor, who is finishing out his first term in the California State Senate, emerged victorious despite a massive barrage of outside super PAC spending aimed at trying to take him out in the primary and general elections. While there are still many ballots being counted, the latest tally of votes by the Orange County Registrar of Voters has made clear that Min will finish as the winner of this crucial swing seat being vacated by current Rep. Katie Porter.

“I am honored and humbled to have been elected by the majority of voters in California’s 47th Congressional District, but I am going to Washington, DC with eyes wide open. We are facing the struggle of our lives to try to defend this country and its most cherished legacies and democratic institutions. But I want to be clear—we are not giving up on America, and we cannot give up on America. As the child of immigrants who survived the Korean War, I owe everything I have to this country. In Congress, I will carry on the fight to protect our democracy, safeguard our freedoms, and expand the economic opportunity at the heart of the American Dream.

I want to thank my wife Jane and our three children for inspiring me every day to do what’s right, and my family and friends for their moral support through this campaign. And I want to thank all of the many people out there, including my campaign staff and the many thousands of you who volunteered for us, donated to us, and gave us your blood, sweat, and tears, for your support.

You have my pledge on this—I will continue to stand up for our rights, including the reproductive rights of women, and to fight for a stronger and better future for young people, including creating more affordable housing, reducing gun violence, and doing all we can to rescue our civilization from the climate crisis. The fight has just begun.”

Here’s Scott Baugh’s concession note:

And Congressman Mike Levin was notified last night that he was re-elected to CA-49.  But Levin’s DC roommate Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona took this snap the moment Levin’s race was called last night.

Mike Levin Re-elected

Here’s the email Levin sent this morning:

It’s official: I’ve won re-election in California’s 49th Congressional District!

This was a hard fought, competitive race and I am proud of the incredible work we put in as a team, with hundreds of volunteers to get this over the finish line. We knocked on thousands of doors, called thousands of voters, and held town halls all throughout the district to share our message of successfully delivering bipartisan results for our residents.

Among the top reasons for this win is my record of passing 30 bipartisan laws and bringing back more than $1 billion in funding for projects that are improving our quality of life. I stand by my record and look forward to building on that progress.

We still have work to do to lower costs, secure our borders, protect Social Security and Medicare, remove the nuclear waste at San Onofre, put more sand on our beaches, and much more.

I am committed to working with my colleagues from both parties on commonsense bipartisan solutions to our pressing challenges. We must come together to deliver for all American families.

Let’s get to work!

Thank you,

Mike

Congratulations to both.

Min had a hard road to climb.  He had to fight off Democratic challenger Joanna Weiss who had the backing of WAVE, Supervisor Katrina Foley, Assembly Rep. Cottie Petre-Norris and other “influencers” in social media who gave Scott Baugh his blueprint for attacking Min who had the county and state party endorsements.  I’ve kept a file of every dirty trick Min dealt with during the primary.  Min won but faced a massive fundraising deficit for the general election.  He raised just enough to win.

The OC Register’s Sal Rodriguez is surely crying in his beer last night.

Weiss spent time in Wisconsin and Nevada during the run up to election day, not walking in CA47 or CA49 where she lives.  She tweeted concern for the future of the Department of Education last night when Trump II takes over.  Not lost on me is the fact her kids go to and went to a pricey private school.

Baugh followed the Weiss-Foley-Norris playbook on Min; but endorsements from the LA Times praising Min’s vision and character and the brilliant work of Min’s campaign team made the difference in a close race.  We look forward to the work of Min, Levin and Congressman Lou Correa to do battle for the good guys in January.
