Requiesce in pace Marti Schrank – “Marti from the Party”

Editor’s Note:  There are 50,000 more registered Democrats in Orange County today than Republicans and we lost one of those tireless people that made this a fact over the past weekend.  Marti Schrank, known as “Marti from the Party,” passed away.   It’s been a tough year; Ray Cordova, Misha Houser, and now Marti.  How fortunate are we as OC Democrats to have such tireless fighters?  May they rest in peace.

Here’s a statement from the DPOC on the news.

It is with deep sadness that we received the news over the weekend that Marti Schrank, our grand dame of Orange County politics, has passed away. Beginning decades ago, Marti embarked on a career as an activist and played an integral role in overtaking Republicans in voter registration.

Marti became known as the top volunteer at the Democratic Party of Orange County. She was a master at handling the office phones, always had stories to tell, and curated a great collection of Dem memorabilia.

“Marti Schrank made the TV news in 1996 when Congressman “B-1 Bob” Dornan alleged voter fraud in his upset loss to Loretta Sanchez. Marti got on camera saying the fight wasn’t over “until the fat lady sings.” She then burst out in song. Marti was one of a kind,” said Ada Briceno, DPOC Chair.

Marti introduced countless young people to the Democratic Party. She trained them, plugged them into campaigns, and introduced them to clubs like the Orange County Young Democrats. She was especially happy to see young women getting involved in politics and would stay in touch with those she mentored. “Marti from the Party,” as she was affectionately known, left an indelible mark on Orange County politics. Her commitment and dedication to Democratic values will continue to inspire Party veterans as well as newcomers.

We extend our condolences to Marti’s family and we will communicate additional information regarding services as we receive it.

They broke the mold after Marti Schrank and she will be deeply missed.

  1. This blog has increasingly become a source of sad news!!!

As you point out, Marti shaped the community. She was a strong woman whose enthusiasm and dedication were contagious. I remember how Marti’s spirited guidance while I was involved with the OC Young Democrats ignited my passion for politics. This very blog was inspired by that fervor. I don’t know how the past few years have been for her, but I’m sure her legacy will live on. Fire like that is not easily extinguished.

    • Mike, we did run Kim Nguyen’s baby announcement and no one ever sends us wedding or birth announcements. But it is important to honor those who made such a difference in our party and in our lives
