Irvine native Alex Mohajer is running a grassroots campaign to become the first openly LGBTQ+ legislator elected from Orange County and potentially the only Iranian in the California state legislature

IRVINE, CA — During their official endorsement straw poll meeting on Sunday, the Irvine Democratic Club voted to support Alex Mohajer for California State Senate in the 37th Senate District.  Mohajer earned 64% of the votes cast, earning the club’s support to replace outgoing Senator Dave Min, who is running for Congress.

Other winners of the night included Dave Min for Congress, Farrah Khan for OC County Board of Supervisors, and Nancy Watkins for OC Board of Education.

The 38-year-old Iranian Irvine native and LGBTQ+ civic leader announced in late March that he would be vying for the 37th State Senate seat. He earned an impressive six-figure fundraising haul in his first fundraising quarter through mostly small-dollar donations from more than 500 contributions and announced at the outset of his campaign that he would accept no contributions from corporate PACs, corporate healthcare lobbies, or the fossil fuels industry.

On Saturday, he was endorsed by the California Democratic Renters Council.

“Californians are ready to send a new generation of diverse, intersectional voices to elected office,” said Mohajer in a statement. “I am proud to earn the support of my hometown Democratic club, and together we are going to send a homegrown representative to the legislature in Sacramento.”

Mohajer’s historic campaign has already garnered national attention. Last month, he was named one of the 2023 #Pride50, honored as one of the most inspirational LGBTQ+ voices in the country. He has also received features in the LA TimesOC Register, and the Bay Area Reporter.

He has centered his campaign on climate change, health care, mental health, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and economic policies that lift up working-class families, including affordable housing, students, and seniors.

  1. Which Democratic club in Irvine does the DPOC officially sanction as a party affiliate?

Min has the endorsement of the DGI and the IDC. What that’s like 60 people combined or so including that troll of a person Jutta Gamboa. Eww.
