Min and Porter big winners of DGI Poll

The Democrats of Greater Irvine have announced the results of their endorsement vote earlier this week and before we offer the numbers, some caveats.

This was 57 voting members which is barely a statistical blip on how an election mght actually play out.  There was one surprise that I’ll get to in a minute.

Previous endorsement votes for this club were sneaky; candidates showing up with a bunch of Young Dems from UCI who get membership for free but are all voting for one candidate.  That’s why the club’s bylaws reflect qualified voters who are active and not same day sign ups.

Here’s the results:

57 club members voting:

Congressional District 47:
Dave Min – 67.3%
Joanna Weiss – 29.1%
Dom Jones – 3.6%
No Endorsement – 0%

State Senate District 37:
Josh Newman – 62.5%
Alex Mohajer – 35.7%
No Endorsement – 1.8%

Assembly District 73:
Cottie Petrie-Norris – 77.8%
No Endorsement – 22.2%

OC Board of Supervisors, District 3:
No Endorsement – 74.1%
Farrah Khan – 25.9%

OC Board of Education, Area 3:
Nancy Watkins – 94.1%
No Endorsement – 5.9%

U.S. Senate:
Katie Porter – 61.8%
Adam Schiff – 32.7%
Barbara Lee – 5.5%
No Endorsement – 0%

It’s not a surprise that Katie Porter did well in her adopted hometown;  an LA Times poll showed her strength lies in Orange County, younger voters and those who identify was “very Liberal.”  From the Times story:

Likely voters older than 65 favor Schiff over Porter, 29% to 12%, the poll found. Those younger than 50 tend to favor Porter: She leads Schiff 23% to 14% among likely voters 30-39 and 27% to 6% among those 18-29.

That could pose a problem for Porter: She does best among those who, while considered likely to submit a ballot, often don’t show up at election time. A recent Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies analysis of voting in the state found that habitual voters tend to be white and older than the average Californian. Frequent voters were also disproportionately over the age of 50.

But the fact that the election is taking place in a presidential year could mitigate that disadvantage, said Sara Sadhwani, a professor of politics at Pomona College.

“One of the things about younger voters … that we tend to see is an increase in turnout in a presidential election year,” she said.

Dave Min’s win reflects a growing sense that his misdemeanor DUI charge hasn’t turned off Democratic voters to his canddiacy as Scott Baugh is simply devoid of a campaign platform other than invoking a culture war against “wokeness.”

And now for the “do you really want to cut off your nose to spite your face lecture.”  Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan is the only Democrat running against the awful Don Wagner for County Supervisor.  She has won three straight elections in Irvine yet only one in four DGI members voted to endorse her campaign for this critical seat.

Honestly DGI, if you don’t support Khan’s campaign, you’re telling me you want another four years of Dangerous Don in a seat of real power in this county.  To which I’ll put my Logan Roy hat on with my zip up wool sweater and tell you to f-off.  Wake up.

  1. Farrahkhan is not a democrat.

And, Josh Newman spreads the same pro Azeri propaganda she does.

So, the DGI and Judas Kev look a little hypocritical right now.

  2. Well you are right about the sample size.

I am repeatedly puzzled by the VOC’S reporting regarding Anaheim in as nearly EVERY article they publishes features the same ten “activists” and points to the same 66 concerned residents. In a city of 400,000+.

This skews the narrative in a way that is dangerous as low information voters “sheep” follow the interests of a select few. Generally (as in Anaheim) this can be the LAST PEOPLE on God’s green earth should be listened to.

Including, I’ll say it’s early in the cycle. History has taught us that the hard working candidates who stick with reasonable positions do better than the “fan boys and girls” that broadcast on Social Media.

  3. You’ve got kids writing for a wannabe outfit.
What are you expecting? Those kids weren’t out of diapers during 9/11! You think they know who is who and what is what? Pfft. Don’t hold your breath. Puppies.

    • The Voice of OC does exceptional journalism; and the kids are young but have great teachers in the senior editing staff. Is every story stellar? No, but that’s true of every publication.
