In the wake of CNN’s televised Trump rally where the lies were fast and furious, there’s disappointing news. YouGov, a global public opinion and data company, sheds light on the current state of trust in the news media in the United States.
The poll, which surveyed more than 1,500 Americans, found that only 25% of respondents said they trusted the news media “a great deal” or “quite a lot.” This number is down from 32% in 2022, indicating a continued decline in trust over the past year.
Interestingly, trust in the news media varies significantly based on political affiliation. Among Democrats, 48% said they trusted the news media a great deal or quite a lot, while only 7% of Republicans said the same. Independents fell somewhere in between, with 20% expressing a great deal or quite a lot of trust in the news media.
The poll also asked respondents to rate their trust in specific news outlets. The most trusted outlet overall was PBS, with 41% of respondents saying they trusted it a great deal or quite a lot. Following close behind were CNN at 37%, and ABC News at 35%. Fox News was the least trusted outlet, with only 9% expressing a great deal or quite a lot of trust in it.
The survey was conducted earlier this month. Various factors may contribute to this trend, including the proliferation of misinformation and the increased polarization of partisanship. In addition, some have criticized the news media for a lack of transparency and bias. The survey found that liberals tend to get their news from print or web outlets while conservatives get theirs from broadcast outlets.
So, what can be done to improve trust in the news media? Broadcast news outlets, in particular, should prioritize their reputation over their ratings which is the oppositie of what CNN did this week. Trust in the news media is essential for a healthy democracy. Without a shared understanding of the facts, it’s impossible to engage in informed debate. By taking steps to improve transparency and accuracy, news outlets can help restore trust and strengthen our democracy.
Mr Chmielewski, I agree trust in the general media is lower than my compost pit. I long for “a shared understanding of facts” maybe washed down with anything but an Anheuser-Bush product. However, the six monopolies controlling 90% of our news sources are sponsored and funded largely by mutual fund companies, CalPERS, and Pharmaceutical companies. Their sole purpose is to multiply their wallet, at our expense and decline of health from their chemical injection mandates. The now paranoid people who understand a republican government wondered why all “informed debate” was eliminated from You Tube starting three years ago. The Feds paid Twitter and Google to censor all dissonant voices. This caused the rise of resources such as: Rumble, FrankSpeech, Epoch Times, Brighteon, Odysee, BitChute, Dinesh D’Souza, Steve Bannon and jbushow.com. To think I was worried about Irvine confiscating my Kitchen Aid gas range. Now, my biggest fear is this systematic degradation of any two brain cells sparked with a free opinion by ever-increasing self-appointed authorities.

Your first premise is wrong. And your other media sources are pits of misinformation
This seems to be the best place to put this; Greg Diamond has a post over the weekend which really took aim at Congressman Lou Correa and the CDP as their convention was in LA over the weekend. Specifically, Greg’s gripe with Lou is that Lou isn’t nearly progressive enough. The criticism of Correa having endorsed a Republican for OC Sheriff isn’t lost on Greg’s removal from the DPOC for his endorsement of Todd Spitzer in 2018.
Greg gets some facts wrong; he writes:
“[Edited to add: It may seem ironic to people for me to be joining a call for exclusion of state party delegates who endorsed Republicans, given that I was kicked out of party leadership for … endorsing a Republican, Todd Spitzer, for DA. Let me explain the differences. That was a race in which I had supported a Democrat, Brett Murdoch, in the primary — whose candidacy failed in part because another candidate, Lenore Albert, came in later to split the Democratic vote, In other words, I did not support a Republican against a Democrat, but against someone whom I considered a worse Republican Tony Rackauckas, who I had reason to believe would eventually hand over the job to yet another even worse Repulican, Huntington Beach City Attorney Mike E. Gates, who was far young than Spitzer. But the more significant reason was that CDP had no authority for that race! (They justified their move by, essentially, saying that I was on double-secret probation and that their lack of jurisdiction in the race didn’t matter.)”
#1. Greg wasn’t in DPOC leadership; his removal as North Vice Chair happened in 2014. His removal from the DPOC Central Committee was in 2018 for endorsing Spitzer which was/is a clear violation of Party bylaws.
#2. Lenore Albert didn’t split the Democratic vote; Brett Murdock was a horrible candidate. The pair combined for about 26% of the vote with Spitzer having a comfortable lead over the combined total of Democratic votes.
#3. The CDP had nothing to do with Greg’s removal from the DPOC in 2018. The CDP did remove Greg as a delegate to the party convention for being verbally abusive to other delegates and Greg tried to run again to be a delegate until CDP leadership stepped in and declared his candidacy ineligible becuase his suspension was not yet completed.
Perhaps that stroke was worse than we all thought; go back and edit those typos Vern.
Dan,
It’s become clear that Greg Diamonds usefulness is limited to attracting GNATS because of his Audacious body odor.
The idea that this nutcase has ANY influence over anyone is laughable. Lou Correa could give two shits about Greg Diamond and/or Vern Nelson. Given that Vern’s wife repeatedly accuses one of Correa’s staffer of stalking her (if true, that staffer should have his head examined, she is crazier than Greg).
As Greg Diamond and Vern Nelson and their gaggle of losers at the OJB scurry for revelance, others in OC are FIGHTING for real DEMOCRATIC principles, not free shit.
BTW, if Greg is struggling to pay for parking in DTLA, maybe he should pick up a shift at Trader joe’s in his hometown of Brea, where he claims to be the (STEP) Father of three (at least until the CAL-FRESH benefits end when they turn 18.
