State Senator Dave Min announced on his Facebook page that he was cited for a DUI in Sacramemto. He apologized for the incident to family, friends, and voters. What’s honorable is coming clean about it, something most Republican candidates and office holders almost never do in OC.
Min wrote:
Last night I was cited for a misdemeanor for driving under the influence. My decision to drive last night was irresponsible. I accept full responsibility and there is no excuse for my actions. To my family, constituents and supporters, I am so deeply sorry. I know I need to do better. I will not let this personal failure distract from our work in California and in Washington.
Min is known for his work in reining in gun violence, offering policies to restrict gun shows on county and state owned facilities. His critics seized on this to say drunk drivers killed more people than guns and this isn’t true at all. In 35 states, gun violence is responsible for more deaths than drunk driving according to the Violence Policy Center. The 2022 report says:
Gun deaths outpaced motor vehicle deaths in 34 states and the District of Columbia in 2020, the most recent year for which data is available.
That year, gun deaths (including gun suicide, homicide, and fatal unintentional shootings) outpaced motor vehicle deaths (both occupant and pedestrian) in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
In just over a decade, the number of states plus the District of Columbia where gun deaths exceed motor vehicle deaths has increased from just 13 in 2010 to 35 in 2020—a jump of 169 percent.
Coming clean is admirable. A single DUI for someone who is an exceptional husband, father and elected official shouldn’t be a deal-breaker even if this incident is a disappointment.
