Irvine city council member Larry Agran will challenge Irvine Vice Mayor Tammy Kim for the Mayor’s chair in 2024.  It’s a seat he’s held before and Agran has more insitutional knowledge of the city and operations than the entire city council colleagues put together.  And unlike certain council members, Agran does the work and develops the policy behind initiatives he proposes, not relying on staff.

Here’s his email announcement:

Dear Friends & Supporters,

I want you to be among the first to know that I have decided to run for Mayor of Irvine in 2024.

During my last tenure as Mayor (2000-2004), Irvine became the safest, smartest, greenest city in the nation. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened by design … and with strong leadership.

I am most proud that all of the big things we accomplished together as a City under my leadership were done with broad community participation and support.

I have spent my entire adult life standing up for those without a voice. Since returning to the Council in December 2020, I have continued to fight for the best interests of our City’s residents. That means advocating for the families in north Irvine who have been living within a mile of a toxic asphalt plant. That means fighting to get us out of the corrupt Orange County Power Authority (OCPA). That means supporting the City’s transition to district elections. And, that means making sure the City fulfills the promise we made to veterans and their families to build a Veterans Memorial Park within our Great Park.

I want to let you know that I have recorded a message explaining why I am running for Mayor. The video briefly recaps our City’s previous accomplishments and outlines the work I am doing to redeem the promise of Irvine as America’s best-planned city. I hope you will take a few minutes to view the video … and then share the link with your Irvine neighbors.

In all of my campaigns here in Irvine, I have never relied on donations from big land developers, corporate PACs, or special interest lobbyists. Instead, my campaigns — our campaigns — are powered by hundreds of volunteers and grassroots donors.

If you would like to make a donation to our 2024 Mayoral campaign and get us off to a strong start, please click here.

I hope I can count on your support in the campaign ahead!

a quick note to readers: sorry for not posting last week; my PR agency represented 11 clients at a major data security conference in San Francisco so my days started early and ended late.  I did not even check in online except for email the entire week.  But we’re back this week and will be posting.//Dan Chm.
