COUNTY OF ORANGE TO RELEASE 2021 HATE CRIMES REPORT

Report shows a six percent increase in hate activity from 2020 in Orange County.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (September 6, 2022) — On September 15, 2022, the public is invited to participate in the virtual release of the 2021 Orange County (OC) Hate Crimes Report, where the Orange County Human Relations Commission (Commission) will present Orange County hate activity trends for 2021. The County produces and publishes this report annually to increase awareness, strengthen hate crime prevention programming, and promote a bias-free community. The Report will be available online upon release on the OC Human Relations Commission website at http://occommunityservices.org/ochrc.

The 2021 OC Hate Crimes Report reflects a six percent increase in total hate crimes and incidents from 2020 in Orange County. Of the 398 hate crimes and incidents reported, 60% of cases were motivated by the person’s race, ethnicity, and/or national origin.

“As a community, it is important we continue to stand up to prejudice, so everyone can feel safe and secure,” said Chairman Doug Chaffee, Fourth District Supervisor of the OC Board of Supervisors. “The continued rise in hate activity across the nation shows we can do more to create an all-inclusive environment, which is why my fellow Board members and I strongly support expanding the County’s anti-hate efforts.”

In December 2021, the OC Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to approve a $1 million proposal submitted by the Commission to expand anti-hate efforts, which received a unanimous vote from the OC Board of Supervisors. These efforts focus on expanding language accessibility and ways to report bias-motivated hate; creating a comprehensive service provider network to improve and expand support services for victims of hate; and launching a multicultural, multilingual, and diverse education/awareness campaign for all of Orange County.

  1. Rumor has it COP Kent is a crypto Armenian.

Either way. This is a bad look. Kent with diplomat of a country that doesn’t recognize the Armenian Genocide and a known Genocide denier. It wouldn’t be ok for him to take photos with Holocaust deniers and anti-Semites or neo-nazis.

  2. Greg Diamond is a pathetic excuse for an attorney.
I could go on for paragraphs but I recommend you go on the orange juice blog and see how they have politicized a vicious hate crime for their benefit. These are the most selfish self centered idiotic bunch of people I have ever met.
There mentality is toxic. They will stoop to just about any low including recruiting foreign Nationals, mostly Hindus from India to fulfill their vengeance against elected officials and they’re using a hate crime to accomplish this.
James Mai lives and works in Irvine he’s also a commissioner in Irvine. For Greg and Vern this has nothing to do with a hate crime if it did they would be going to Irvine to protest. The only thing they are doing is agitating the Board of supervisors and using this hate incident to further their own personal objectives. It is pathetic to watch. Go on the blog and look for yourself please.

    • I didn’t see Mai on a list of Commissioners for the city of Irvine; do you have details about which city commission he’s on? Which restaurant did he allegedly defile?

  3. Hi, it seems like the #ShameHateOC folks are tired of Greg and Vern, mostly as they feel they are being used -as they put it- as “clowns in Vern’s circus”. Vern and Greg have been exploiting this hate crime and it’s painful to watch. Please go to http://www.facebook.com/shamehate or http://www.twitter.com/shamehateOC to see this movement’s progress.

Dan, I’m not sure if you knew, but James Mai is under investigation by the FBI for his own admission that he vandalized a Hindu owned restaurant. Unfortunately we don’t know with certainty if that’s true and I don’t think the ShameHateOC people do either. He claimed it was in Orange. You could contact Sonal or Vasant at exposinghinduphobia@gmail.com if you want updates. Hope that helps! Best, Vic.

    • Thanks Vic. The FBI will not confirm or deny any investigation so if you have first hand knowledge of anyone questioned by them, please let me know

  4. So, Dan: Vern is a Child Care Commissioner in the City of Irvine and a Housing and Community Development Commissioner for the County of Orange. If you look at Mayor Khan’s Twitter page, she has in fact acknowledged James Mai’s disgusting comments. I believe a municipal investigation is in progress. I know for a fact there is one at the County level, with the Housing Authority.
    Best, Vic.

  5. Sorry it came out wrong. Brain fart. VERN and Greg, or at least one of them was supposed to speak at an Irvine City Council meeting because JAMES MAI is a Child Care Commissioner in Irvine. Apparently Vern flaked out, to the dismay of the Hindus. That’s all I know. I will tell one of the ShameHateOC people to come on here and comment. I think they are busy trying to get James Mai cancelled from an event in Cerritos next weekend. In case I have to say so, nobody in my family is related to Councilmember Tammy Kim.

  6. My name is Sonal Kher, I am writing on behalf of #ShameHateOC. Please help us #RemoveHinduphobe #JamesMai from #Cerritos event. Please email Honourable Janice Hahn fourthdistrict@bos.lacounty.gov and ask her to #BanJamesMai from this event https://vibesandsmiles.org/events/unite-for-progress

His appearance violate #LACounty’s own #AntiHate policy, as outlined here https://211la.org/anti-hate-program-materials

Thank you on behalf of #ExposingHinduphobia.
    Stop #HindusUnderAttackbyJamesMai.
