The Orange County Power Authority is the latest example of what everyone ought to support but shouldn’t due to incompetent management, broken promises, and general ineptitude. And please remember this debacle in Irvine when Council member Mike Carroll runs for re-election as he portrayed this board as a “competent one.”
If you are in Irvine, Fullerton, Buena Park or Huntington Beach and want to pay less for electricity, grab your Southern California Edison inivoice now and track down your account number. Then call 1-866-262-7693. click here: https://www.ocpower.org/residential/opt-out/ The prompts are easy to follow.
I’m a member of my HOA Board and there was a perception by fellow Board members that you had to opt-in to OCPA when the opposite is true, so we’ve taken steps to communicate what OCPA is all about with guidance for homeowners to enroll or opt out. This misperception is just evidence on how bad OCPA is communicating with its customers.
And OCPA wants to guilt you into staying using local control, green energy, and pro-environment messages with no information at all that your electric bill will go up. And being pro-renewable energy is important, which is why we had 29 solar panels installed two years ago. My electric bill was $20 last month and my realtor friends tell me that the cost of buying the system adds to the value of my home — so the system has already paid for itself.
Once Brian Probolsky is either fired or resigns and Mike Carroll is replaced as OCPA chair, we’ll reconsider the extra couple of bucks.
Great analysis. Thanks!!!
I live in Huntington Beach and received a flyer in the mail today stating that my service will be transferred to OCPA this October. I immediately went to the OCPA website to opt out and was informed my account was not eligible to opt out. I spoke to an OCPA rep on the phone and was told my service was not scheduled to be transitioned until June 2023, therefore I could not opt out until April 2023. When I asked why I received a flyer saying my service would be transferred this October and the OCPA website reflects the same conversion date, the rep responded that the information was incorrect.
Another fine example of a government agency that isn’t being run effectively.
I live in Huntington Beach and I just opted out (Aug 8, 2022). Give it another try.
I thought I opted out too ! I guess I better follow up & make sure !
Just received the first mailer on this topic today. Their public outreach is non-existent. I thought it was junk mail except for the fact that I read it and said: “What Orange County Power Authority?”. I bet most people will discard this and not even know they are being auto-enrolled. BTW – They still need to depend 100% on Edison’s infrastructure to transmit and distribute this power. This is the craziest thing of I have heard of in a while. Folks will be up in arms once they don’t pay their first few bills to the right provider, get switched back to Edison and then have to still pay the gap bill to some random provider they didn’t know they had. Likely incurring penalties and charges to re-activate with Edison. This is not how to go about getting clean power. That can be regulated to Edison with no need for this middle-man brokering. I opted out in a hurry!!!
At least you got a mailer.
Initially, my address popped up as “not eligible” but a phone call resolved everything. Put reminders in your calendar. You are right about people paying to SCE and PCPA. It’s a shit show.
Your article “Want to Opt-Out …” (of SCPA) published Aug 2 begins, “… what everyone ought to support but shouldn’t due to incompetent management, broken promises, and general ineptitude.” I would be interested in receiving a refence to an article that discusses / explains that opening sentence’s assertions.

And then google news OCPA or Orange County Power Authority. Or just stick keep your head in the sand and get your information from your leaders.
Sheesh.
Oh. There is also this. Pretty comprehensive. Pretty damning. Hello?!?!? Diana Dee, your bifocals are calling.

I’m still debating. When I looked at the OC Power rates, they were a lot lower than what I am paying now due to SCE recent high rates. Am I missing something?
You may not looking at the 100% renewable rate which you are being opted in at. Hard to tell without looking at what you are looking at.
Read this, it may help.

I heard on the radio that the Orange County supervisor voted to withdraw from the ocpa. Can anyone confirm?
They are talking about it
