A Fiftieth Anniversary this Friday

Richard Nixon Resignation Speech

June 17, 1972 marks the 50th anniversary of the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC that lead to the downfall of President Richard M. Nixon and indictments of key members of his staff.

Read all about it here:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/watergate-50th-anniversary/

The books that came out about that crime and that time continue to be extraordinary.  “All the President’s Men,” The Final Days,” “Will,” “Blind Ambition” are all amazing.  My favorite is “The Powers That Be” about the major media that covered the case.

If you’re streaming, I recommend the STARZ show “Gaslit” which sees the Watergate scandal through the eyes of John and Maureen Dean and John Mitchell and his wife Martha.  It stars Julia Roberts and Sean Penn as the Mitchell’s.  Actor Shea Whigham plays G. Gordon Liddy and I’ll cut to the chase.  Just give the man the Emmy now.

There’s always “All The President’s Men” with Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford, and “Nixon” with Anthony Hopkins.

And if you’re planning to commemorate the day, the Richard Nixon Library has nothing planned to acknowledge this date in history.
