Governor Closes the Beaches; Republicans lose Their Minds

In seeing photos on social media over the weekend of people going tot he beaches, what most distribed me were photos of a former neighbor I watch grow from an elemetary school kid into a married woman with two young children at the beach.  The single greatest responsibility of a parent to to keep their kids safe and shge did not do this.  If the kids somehow are infected with the COVID19 virus and she asks for prayersthose will be directed that she excerise better judgement.

That all said, Gavin Newsome shut down the beach last night.  here’s the order:

From a story in TheHill, this:

“Medical professionals tell us the importance of fresh air and sunlight in fighting infectious diseases, including mental health benefits,” he said. “Orange County citizens have been cooperative with California state and county restrictions thus far. I fear that this overreaction from the state will undermine that cooperative attitude and our collective efforts to fight the disease, based on the best available medical information.”

Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel called the governor’s decision an overreaction and an abuse of power. She said she would be “looking into an appropriate response” to the situation.

“I trust our Orange County residents to make good choices — wearing face masks, staying six feet apart and staying home when they don’t feel well,” she said in a statement. “We have here an opportunity to embrace personal responsibility while also taking care of our neighbors. Gov. Newsom clearly doesn’t share that faith…”

Third District supervisor Don Wagner penned this:

“Medical professionals tell us the importance of fresh air and sunlight in fighting infectious diseases, including mental health benefits,” he said. “Orange County citizens have been cooperative with California state and county restrictions thus far. I fear that this overreaction from the state will undermine that cooperative attitude and our collective efforts to fight the disease, based on the best available medical information.”

Statement on Governor Newsom’s Order to Close All Beaches and Hiking Trails
ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Hon. Fred M. Whitaker, Chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, released the following statement on Governor Newsom’s order to close all California beaches and hiking trails:

“We are greatly angered that Governor Newsom decided to close all beaches and hiking trails starting this Friday. It is a complete slap in the face to local control and has nothing to do with health.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors and local city councils are the best to determine the status of public areas such as beaches and hiking trails. These local bodies looked at the data, consulted with health experts, and more important their constituents before deciding to keep our beaches open.

Every local law enforcement entity found last weekend’s beach usage in Orange County to be in compliance with social distancing. Yet King Gavin decided press stories were more worthy of trust than law enforcement. I guess we should not be surprised.

It has been a long six weeks since the Governor issued his original stay at home order. Orange County and California residents cooperated and flattened the curve. His actions are arrogant and unnecessary.

From his lack of transparency with the legislature on spending to closing our public spaces – it is clear Gavin Newsom thinks he can control all aspects of society without question.

A pandemic does not cancel our constitution, our branches of government or our right to be governed by those we elected in our local communities.”

I wouldn’t worry much about Fred Whitaker; even OC GOP doesn’t listen to him or follow his directives.

It’s easy:

Stay home

Social distance

Work from home if you can

We have a good six weeks until the downward slope appears.  ComicCon is closed.  The OC Fair is Closed.  The Tustin Chili Cookoff is likely to be closed.

Stay home.  Stay safe. Ignore what Republican operatives tell you to do.

  1. We are so close to having things open up a little bit and there are some who are willing to ruin this for everyone. For what? For “liberty?”

We want real freedom to be able to move around again. Don’t blow it now and don’t try to cloak faux outrage with references to the constitution. As said, it’s easy. Stay home. Please.
