Today, Senator Thomas J. Umberg (D – Santa Ana), released a statement following an Executive Order (N-48-20) made by Governor Gavin Newsom. Governor Newsom’s order requires the City of Santa Ana to conduct their recall election as an all-mail ballot election. The election is scheduled for May 19, 2020.
“I commend Governor Newsom for defending the fundamental right to vote for the people of Santa Ana. By sending every registered voter a vote-by-mail ballot while authorizing sensible in-person voting opportunities, we balance the need of having an election with the health and safety of voters and election workers,” said Senator Umberg, Chair of the Senate Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments. “As we saw in the City of Westminster recall election on Tuesday, voters were able to safely exercise their right to vote during this unprecedented health crisis. Since the provisions in this Executive Order are similar to the Executive Order for the recall election in Westminster, I have complete faith that Neal Kelley, Orange County Registrar of Voters, will do everything possible to ensure the voters of Santa Ana are educated of this change, and informed on how to safely participate in the election on May 19th.”
Local election officials can also make in-person voting available, to ensure every voter has an opportunity to vote, but only in a manner consistent with public health and safety, including appropriate physical distancing.
