The Democratic Foundation of Orange County will hold a noon luncheon in honor of Senator Tom Umberg on February 22, 2019 – and you’re invited! Tom ran an exciting race to flip the 34th Senatorial District and expand the Democratic lead in the California State Legislature. Tom’s victory in a once-Red part of Orange County was his way of contributing to the Blue Wave that swept across the state and nation. The voters of the 34th Senatorial District spoke loudly upon electing Tom; they made it clear that they want intelligent, responsible, and tried-and-tested leadership.
Tom’s long career of public service began with his enlistment in the United States Army, wherein he rose to the rank of Colonel by the time that he concluded his service. Tom’s great contributions to the United States Army did not go unnoticed, and this is reflected by the numerous military accolades he amassed, which include: the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, the US Coast Guard Distinguished Public Service Award, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal.
Upon leaving active duty, Tom went on to graduate with his Juris Doctor from UC Hastings and was appointed an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Orange County shortly thereafter. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Tom fought corruption, prosecuted gang members, and protected civil rights.Tom would also go on to be appointed Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy by President Bill Clinton. During his tenure as Deputy Director, Tom led the fight in preventing the flow of foreign drugs in the United States and to reduce drug abuse.
At various points during his tenure as a member of the Assembly, Tom had been appointed Chair of the Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee, Chair of the Elections and Redistricting Committees, as well as authored over 60 measures that would go on to become law. Now as a State Senator, Tom vows to fight for his constituents, protect the rights of workers and immigrants, help our veterans, and strengthen small business.
