Equality California Endorses Dave Min in CA-45

IRVINE, Calif. — Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Democratic candidate Dave Min, who is challenging Republican incumbent Representative Mimi Walters for California’s 45th Congressional District.

“The LGBTQ community has made great strides in the last decade, but the Trump-Pence Administration and their allies in Congress want to turn back the clock,” said Equality California Executive Director Rick Zbur. “Equality California is proud to endorse Dave Min because he understands that full equality and social justice for the LGBTQ community are fundamental, non-negotiable issues. Dave is the best candidate to take on anti-LGBTQ extremist Mimi Walters, and we are behind him 100 percent.”

Out of California’s entire Congressional delegation, Representative Walters was one of just nine members to earn a zero percent on Equality California’s 2017 Legislative Scorecard, indicating an extreme anti-LGBTQ voting record. Last year, Walters supported Representative Vicky Hartzler’s (R-MO) failed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, attacking brave transgender service members and their families. In 2008, Walters pledged “to fight the Supreme Court’s decision to allow gay marriage in California.”

“As an Asian-American who grew up in California in the 1980s, I remember vividly what it was like to feel bullied and discriminated against, to feel like there was no one standing up for me and my rights,” said Min. “President Trump is singling out the LGBTQ community for attack, and sadly, our Congressional representative Mimi Walters refuses to stand up to him and in favor of equality and decency.”

Dave Min is also endorsed by the California Democratic Party, California Labor Federation, 10 members of Congress and a growing list of state and local leaders.

“In fact, in 2008, Walters referred to the Supreme Court’s ruling in support of marriage equality as a ‘travesty for family values,’” Min added. “In my family, we teach our children that hatred and discrimination are wrong. When elected, I promise to be an ally of the LGBTQ community. I will stand up to the Trump Administration’s attacks and fight for the Equality Act. I will push for inclusive immigration reform and protecting the 1 million LGBTQ immigrants in our country. America is a land of opportunity, equality and openness, and those are the ‘family values’ I intend to fight for in Washington, DC.”
