The entertainment press is reporting that former OC Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is executive producing a new political drama called “The Accidental Candidate,” and the storyline sort of mirrors Sanchez’s rise to Congress on the back on B-1 Bob Dornan.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
NBC is looking to a former congresswoman for a new take on the political drama.
The network has handed out a script commitment to drama Accidental Candidate, which counts former Democratic congresswoman Loretta Sanchez as an exec producer.
The drama explores what happens when after a small-town mother’s passionate town hall confrontation with a politician goes viral and she becomes thrust into the spotlight, opting to launch a career she never saw coming. Armed with smart ideas and sheer determination, she impulsively embarks on a successful campaign for Congress, running as the ultimate outsider against a powerful male incumbent.
The drama, sources say, is drawn from Sanchez’s personal experiences when she was first elected in 1996 and defeated long-serving Republican Congressman Bob Dornan.
As it appears the show will loosely be based on Sanchez, let’s cast this. Who would play Sanchez? Who would play Bob Dornan? Could it be set in Orange County? And Washington DC?
For Dornan, I’m thinking Donald Sutherland (who was a Republican speaker of the house in “Madam President”), Ed Begley Jr., or Ed Asner? Richard Dreyfuss also plays bastard Republicans well.
For Sancez, it’s a tough one. Closer to 30 or closer to 45? Linda Fiorentino, Rosario Dawson, Eva Longoria, Olivia Munn, America Ferrara, Dania Ramirez, and Elizabeth Rodriquez (from Orange is the new Black and Fear The Walking Dead) are all decent choices.
We miss Sanchez and NBC good luck with the show.
Good post.
