Gavin Newsom Endorses Farivar for Irvine City Council

Irvine, CA –  Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom endorsed Shiva Farivar’s campaign for Irvine City Council today. In announcing his support, Newsom joins a high profile list of progressive leaders and organizations supporting Farivar, which includes the Orange County League of Conservation Voters, Irvine Councilmember Beth Krom, and former Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang.   

In announcing his support, Newsom stated: 

“Shiva Farivar has the right combination of experience and new ideas that are needed to move Irvine forward. She will be an effective advocate for residents and find commonsense solutions to the challenges facing the city. Shiva will work to keep neighborhoods safe, build stronger relationships with neighborhood schools, and bring civility back to City Hall.  I am proud to announce my endorsement of her campaign.”

Prior to his election as Lieutenant Governor in 2010, Newsom served as Mayor of San Francisco and as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He is an announced candidate for Governor in 2018.

Shiva Farivar is a mother, non-profit founder, local community leader, and longtime Irvine resident. She served on Irvine’s Community Services Commission for seven and one half years, and she chaired the commission for five years. She also chaired the Advisory Committee of Irvine’s Strategic Plan for Children, Youth and Families. Her long history of community involvement includes serving on numerous school site councils, working as the Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Irvine, and directing the Persian New Year Festival in Irvine for two years. In 2014, she was presented with the “Outstanding Supporter of Prevention Award” by the Irvine Prevention Coalition.

Shiva was born in Tehran, but spent much of her childhood in Germany. She received her B.A. in Political Science and German Literature from the University of California, San Diego, and her M.A. in German Literature from U.C. Irvine. She and her husband have lived in Irvine for over 22 years, and they are the proud parents of two children.
