WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) released the following statement in honor of Labor Day, which falls on Monday, September 5, 2016:
“On Labor Day we honor the many contributions and sacrifices of the American worker. We express gratitude for those who fought for fair pay, a five-day work week, pensions, health benefits, safe working conditions, and the right to collectively bargain. And we also recognize how far we still have to go to ensure fairness and opportunity for every hardworking American in the workplace.”
“As a staunch supporter of labor rights, I strongly support raising the federal minimum wage to a living wage, eliminating the gender pay gap, ensuring paid family and sick leave, and protecting retirement security. We must also invest in our infrastructure to create more good-paying jobs, strengthen our economy, and build prosperity for all Americans. American workers are the backbone of our economy and they deserve support, protections, and opportunity.”
“So on Labor Day, let’s recommit ourselves to supporting American workers who work tirelessly to provide for their families and drive America’s success. I hope you relax and enjoy the long weekend. I wish you a safe and happy Labor Day.”
Rep. Sanchez has spent almost 20 years in Congress standing with labor, advocating on behalf of the nation’s workers and the American Labor Movement. Rep. Sanchez is a former dues-paying member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and stood in solidarity with her peers on the picket lines during a major strike in 2002.
