The cardinal sin of this news release announcing Joe Dunn’s candidacy is it lacks a date, so we have no way of knowing if this is a new announcement or an old one, but the details have actually been out in the public domain for a couple of weeks now.  The campaign did return a call to tell us this is brand-spanking new news but there’s nothing new here that wasn’t reported a couple of weeks ago.

Here’s the announcement:

Joe Dunn Enters Race to Succeed Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez

Santa Ana, CA – Joe Dunn, a consumer protection lawyer, educator, and former state senator, launched his highly anticipated campaign for California’s 46th Congressional District today, announced the Dunn campaign.

“Washington politics are hurting opportunities for Orange County’s middle class to get ahead,” said Dunn. “I have the experience to cut through partisan gridlock and help build the consensus needed in Congress to bring in good-paying jobs, expand the middle class, and make the economy work better for working families.”

Joe’s dogged pursuit of justice for our communities across a spectrum of fiscal, legal, educational, and health care reforms makes him the most prepared candidate to break through Washington’s bureaucracy and fight for a more fair economy for Orange County’s middle class.

Joe Dunn has more than three decades of experience holding big corporations and government bureaucracies accountable to Orange County’s middle-class families. Joe empowered communities through the legal system to stop polluters and unscrupulous medical manufacturers. As a California senator, he led the energy crisis investigations that helped crack Enron and ensured that millions of dollars from tobacco settlements would be used for local health care services.

While heading the California Medical Association, Joe worked with physicians to help broaden access to affordable health care for Californians. As executive director of the California Bar, Joe helped implement far-reaching reforms that became an national model for regulatory agencies. As an Orange County community leader and educator, Joe has helped launch a new law school at UC Irvine and is currently working to create the most comprehensive institute in the nation to help protect against Internet based-crime and terrorism while safeguarding individual privacy.

Joe still lives with his wife, Diane, in their Santa Ana home of nearly twenty years. They have two adult children, Sarah and John. California’s 46th congressional district includes the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, and Santa Ana.

The announcement omits details that Dunn hasn’t won an election since 2000 and that he recently resigned from the Board of Directors for the Voice of OC.

  1. Really Dan? Could you be any more snide in your commentary.

First, Dunn was last elected in 2002. Second, His resignation from the board of Voice of OC coincided with the openning of his campaign committee so that he could start raising money. You know very well that it would not be appropriate for Dunn, unless he were a Republican, to serve on Board of a news publication that might cover his campaign. His resignation from the Voice of OC Board is a positive thing, not a negative one. Other than bias, I cannot understand why you found it important to point out it wasn’t mentioned in the release in an attempt to make it a negative issue.

The release you received was the first official campaign release. Candidates all the time announce in multiple ways before their official announcements. Look no further than Hiallary Clinton if you want to find someone who had clearly announced, before they announced and election campaign. While it had been reported that Dunn had resigned from the Voice of OC board, and was indeed running for the 46th Congressional seat. those reports were not the official campaign announcement. The email you got was that official announcement.

Liberal OC has previously been known for giving candidates a fair shake, I hope you can turn towards that history when writing about the 46th Congressional District election campaign. There are several good candidates, all of them deserve a level playing field when it comes to coverage in Orange County’s only Liberal Blog. You need to continue to combat the right-wing noise machine, not feed it.

    • The resignation from the Voice of OC board is a fact. Not sure how you can take that as negative or positive. It’s neutral. But the fact he was instrumental in helping that site get off the ground and be so successful should be seen as a positive.

I’m certainly pro-labor. And Dunn is a friend to labor. I’m also more than aware of Joe’s flirtations with other offices only to leave the party high and dry.

I’ve asked his campaign for an interview.

      • Henry —
if you’d like to try and respond again without the profanity, I’ll post. But your comment has been deleted. I don’t edit comments. They go up or they go away

        • There wasnt any profanity in my comment dan. You just were embarrassed by my pointing out that you are a lil coward that likes to pull cheap tricks. You aren’t offended by my words you are offended by their accuracy.

          • Henry, I’ll meet you anywhere and anytime to chat about politics. Let’s be honest here, the real coward is you. I presume you have a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a grandmother, an aunt, female friends. Please go ask them if the “C” word is ever appropriate. No, I was offended by your words. Like I said, if you want to meet somewhere, you have my email address. Then we’ll see who the coward is.

  2. Disclaimer: I am NO WAY involved with any candidate, organization or campaign, I am not a public employee and I am using my birth name.

With that said, I am wondering and concerned at the eventual role of the Voice Of OC I this race given Dunn’s rich history. This is and should be an issue.

I recognize this blogs relationship with labor ( I respect the way you have handled it), but this is a HUGE responsibility conflict. As Dem’s we like call out the “KOCH BROS.” and other corporate influences, but there is NO DENYING our alliance with labor, especially public employee unions. Let’s hope the Liberal OC, represents it’s positions honestly, I am not convinced we can expect the same from the OCEA backed Voice Of OC.

I have not picked a horse in this race, I am going to wait and here what Joe Dunn, Jose “Lou” Correa, Jordan Brandman as for Bao and the other Sanchez fellow, they would be well advise to actually MOVE into the district.

  3. Can you be anymore obvious in your contempt toward Mr Dunn? Every time I think you can reach no lower, you find an entire new level lower than the last. Lying by omission is so juvenile and cheap, I want to scrape the backside of my eyeballs to un-see it. I read the first announcement for Mr Dunn’s run for the House and in it it said he resigned from the VOC to avoid a perceived conflict of interest. And yet you find a way to cheaply snipe him in a veiled attempt to bolster your friend Lou Correa I’m assuming. You’re transparent i the same way a salamander is. I can you see your intestines and your full of shit. And we already know you are a coward so good thing no one of significance holds any regard for this cowardly screed of pixels you call a blog. I call it a log.

        • I’d say, to be fair, we are a Tait, Jose Moreno, Bao, Dunn, Shaw/Boardman, Sandy Genis, Loretta (till she jumped to the Senate race) blog … pretty hard to find really good people in either party in this County.

            • “We’re a Democratic Party blog Vern. ”
Are you joking? The Democratic Party of Orange County holds this screed up as its official blog? WTF? sOMEONE NEEDS TO CALL THAT OFFICE and address this. This blog is digital vandalism.

              • No, the DPOC doesn’t hold this up as its official blog Henry. No one forces you to come here and you’re free to start your own. I certainly don’t take orders from the party chair and we do take Democrats to task, notably in Santa Ana, but this blog supports Democrats, not conservative Republicans.

                • Well then, you are not a “Democratic Party” bog then are you? Nice way to mislead there Dan. These fake dems you call “Democrats” is laughable. Your buddies “Lou Correa, and Jordan Brandman are noting but DINO’s. that “C” word is a British term, I learned from my mother and grandmother who come from Knightsbridge area of London. the C word is merely something that unsettles a precarious man such as yourself who has none of the testicular fortitude to be honest. The C word means one who is socially repellent and caustic. Like yourself and these bag men you call Democrats worthy of your support and you deprecate a real Democrat like Joe Dunn. You’re cheap and petty. Just like a cowardly salamander. I can see right through you and your innards are packed full of excrement.

                • I didn’t mislead at all; you have poor reading comprehension. I’m not buddies with Lou Correa or Jordan Brandman, but I do speak with Jordan from time to time. The C word is a British term? So tell me the term for a cigarette in Britain and then tell me why it’d be OK to publish here (spoiler alert…it won’t). Socially repellent am I? I am invited to every candidate’s fundraiser. Caustic to you. Good! Salamanders lack the ability to show cowardice or bravery for that matter; they lay eggs and leave their young. I’m sorry you had a bad relationship with your mother, but your comparison makes little sense. Innards are full of excrement? Well I’d hope so. I don’t think my innards are full of butterscotch.

I look forward to speaking with Joe Dunn about his campaign. I’m sure he appreciates the support of those who use the C word often.

                • Oh Nelson, the lawyer who writes for your blog needs edits too. Autocorrect is a bitch.

As far as Diamond’s claim no prominent Dems post here, who posts at your site? Paul Lucas!!!! Hahahaha

    • Dunn has the DUI and Pro-Weed supporters locked up. Or maybe locked up is a bad choice of words to describe Vern Nelson and Paul Lucas?

  4. Henry, thanks for the comment. The press release above is the first actual announcement from the Dunn for Congress campaign. Everything else you read was a news story written just before or after he filed. I have no contempt for Mr. Dunn at all with the exception that his previous flirtations for office only to withdraw have hurt the Democratic Party…something even his supporters have acknowledged to me. actually, I thought not mentioning his role in shaping VOC was a missed opportunity for Dunn. The VOC has surpassed the Register and OC Weekly in impactful investigative journalism in this county. It’s a feather in Dunn’s cap not something to be ashamed of. Don’t misread criticize of the press release for criticism of the candidate. There are a whole generation of voters who don’t know who Joe Dunn is.

  5. Well Joe has a pretty good website up now. I don’t know if it’s new, ut he was NOWHERE to be seen at the police and fire event in downtown Santa Ana Saturday (which seems like an incredible WASTE of resources for what it achieved and the number and make up of those who attended (it was as if they were rushing to get the families off the street and out of DOWNTOWN before dark!)

His Son John has some kind of You Tube message with a snake? Most of Dunn’s early supporters have left Santa Ana for safer environs/better schools etc… Not every Santa Anan lives in a million dollar mansion with armed security response like Joe and Dianne.

I am sure Pantone will bring out some big lawyer money. Lou will work the streets and Brandman the party stalwarts who might eventually be te ones to choose the candidate.
