Bao Nguyen Makes it Official for a Congressional Run

Bao-Nguyen

Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen has filed papers to run for Congress in what will be Loretta Sanchez’s seat in CD-46 according to stories in the OC Register and Anaheim Blog; Nguyen doesn’t live in the district and has been Garden Grove Mayor for about nine months.  Nguyen hasn’t made a formal announcement, but has formed a congressional campaign committee on July 21 and filed with the FEC on July 29.

Former State Senator Joe Dunn filed papers for his first campaign in 10 years earlier this week and also resigned from the Board of Directors for the Voice of OC.  Anaheim Council member Jordan Brandman and former State Senator Lou Correa also have launched campaigns for Congress.  Irvine council member Lynn Schott, a Tea Party Republican, has a campaign committee which she has loaned $900 but raised no funds, is the only Republican in the race.  Schott and Nguyen don’t live in the district.

District registration favors Democrats, but you’d be challenged to call it “Liberal” with portions of Anaheim and Orange that lean right with Santa Ana that is decidedly Democratic.  Sanchez is a leader of the Blue Dog Democrats, a decidedly moderate Democratic voting bloc in Congress.  And her Congressional voting record reflects the politics of her district.  The key for the eventual top two is getting the vote out for a June primary in Santa Ana which had notoriously low turnout for the June 2012 primary as well as the November 2014 mid-terms and the January special election for First District supervisor.  For Lynn Schott, she’s get all the votes of those in the district who automatically vote for any Republican, but she’d be crushed in November by any Democratic challenger especially when her vote to repeal Irvine’s Living Wage comes up.

As far as the tape recording of Bao Nguyen speaking with a Garden Grove police officer, meh.  He used an expletive to describe Council member Phat Bui that is completely accurate in our opinion.  Next issue please.

  1. What do y’all suppose will happen when Loretta changes her mind and decides to keep her seat (re-run). Although I bet Joe spoke to her before undertaking this.

Bao is amazing. less than a year in office, which he won by a mere 15 votes, no accomplishments to speak of, Doesn’t even live in the district and now proudly exclaims “I am going national”. Wow.

    • I hope Bao reconsiders; Garden Grove still needs him, and he doesn’t even live in the district. I hope he throws his support behind Joe.

And I suspect you’re right, that Joe waited until he was assured that Loretta wasn’t gonna boomerang.

      • Hey moron, yes, Yellowcard IS insulting Bao. If you ever read more than the first four words of each paragraph you woulda gleaned that.

  2. Why don’t you two douchebags stick to your own douchebag cirkjerk blog? I don’t know why Dan puts up with you 2 polluting this blog.

    • Well, it would be kind of conspicuous if he didn’t, given what he writes about.

Plus, then it would be mostly you and Rick Clark. Not even he could stand that for long.

  3. I’m troubled about the Bao tape, not by what he said about two GG council members, but by Bao’s behavior. He calls a police officer on duty at 1:26 am Friday morning to talk politics? Was that the best time to hold such a meeting? The officer is on duty…I’m glad the tape was released but this strikes as indefensible and immature.

    • You’re troubled that he’s running against Jordan Brandman, period. If he were running against Janet Nguyen you’d be downplaying this whole thing. Nice to know that you approve of cops breaking the law, though.

  4. You forgot your disclaimer that your step daughter is Bao’s campaign treasurer.

I believe you were troubled by the notion of Sukhee Kang running as a carpetbagger even though he owns a house in Fullerton. Bao doesn’t live in the district. There isn’t a big Vietnamese voting base. Sorry, I am actually going to agree with Vern here and suggest Bao stick to being Mayor. But then your step-daughter gets no fee.

The officer responded to a call and followed procedure even when Bao asked him to turn off the cruiser. If this were Anaheim, you’d be glad the police were recording the conversation.
