Weekend of Happenings

It’s after Labor Day and the fall campaigns are in full swing.  Here’s a snapshot of things to keep track of this weekend:

Lorri Galloway’s on TV Tonight.  Sure, it’s Fox 11 and Brian Calle is one of the hosts, but the camera is going to love how Anaheim’s first woman mayor looks on TV.  From her campaign:

Watch “Your Vote So Cal 2014″ on FOX 11 at 10:30 pm Tonight; Be sure to watch the “You Vote So Cal 2014″ segment on Fox 11 News tonight at 10:30 pm to hear Lorri Galloway’s vision for Anaheim if elected Mayor.  The show is hosted and moderated by Emmy Award winning journalist, Tony McEwing, joined by Brian Calle and Joseph Perkins, editorial staff of the Orange County Register. Tune in for a great show!

I’m sure the Register Opinion boys will find al sorts of reasons to back either Tom Tait or Lucille Kring, but I give Lorri credit for going into the Lion’s Den without a bodyguard which is something Mayor Tait would never do.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that State Rep. Sharon Quirk-Silva is wrapping up a stellar term in the state assembly.  Her office sent us this announcement earlier this week about her legislative accomplishments which challenger Young Kim cannot possibly hope to match:

Eight measures authored by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton) to aid Businesses, Veterans, Foster Care Youth, and Higher Education have passed out of the Legislature and are headed to the Governor for consideration.

“As a Representative of the 65th Assembly District, it has been a true honor to listen to constituents’ ideas and see to it that their voices are heard in Sacramento. I am proud of the meaningful, well-rounded 2014 Legislative Package that our community has put together and I look forward to continue to work with my colleagues to ensure California remains a welcoming home for all,” said Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva.

The following are the Assembly Bills (AB) that are headed to the Governor’s desk:

  • AB 1453 – Orange County Veterans Cemetery would require the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), in voluntary cooperation with local government entities in Orange County, to design, develop, construct, and equip the state-owned and state-operated Southern California Veterans Cemetery.
  • AB 1560 – Income Taxes: Credits: California Competes Tax Credit would offer incentives to businesses by authorizing the Director of Finance to increase the aggregate amount of the economic development credits that may be allocated to taxpayers each year by $25 million per year through 2019.
  • AB 1733 – Public Records: Fee Waiver would establish a fee waiver for people experiencing homelessness that need to obtain a certified copy of their birth record from the Department of Public Health or a state identification card from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • AB 1976 – Student Financial Aid: Competitive Cal Grant A & B Awards would provide the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) the flexibility necessary to ensure that they are actually able to distribute all of the awards it is authorized
  • AB 2454 – Foster Youth: Non-Minor Dependents would permit a former dependent to voluntarily re-enter extended foster care upon the approval of the juvenile court if specific requirements are met.
  • AB 2664 – Military Family Relief Fund would establish a California National Guard Military Family Relief Fund (the New Fund) within the existing California Military Department Support Fund and would transfers money from the California Military Family Relief Fund (the Old Fund) to the New Fund.
  • AB 2668 – Foster Care: Non-Minor Dependent Parents would authorize the development of a “parenting support plan” between a non-minor dependent who resides in a supervised independent living placement and an identified responsible adult who has agreed to act as a mentor under the oversight of the county welfare department.
  • AB 1397 (Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee) – State Civil Service: Veterans Preference Data would add veteran status to the list of specified data collected in order to determine underutilization of certain groups and requires the data analysis of veteran’s status.

September 30th is the last day to for the Governor to sign or veto bills passed by the Legislature before September 1st, and in his possession on or after September 1st. Constituents are encouraged to contact Governor Brown’s Office in support of aforementioned measures.

So put your best “Blue” on and come out and support our candidates!
